Knowing that there are increasingly powerful forces in the universe that he has yet to encounter, Goku spends all of his time training to achieve even greater strength. But, one fateful day a mysterious new Saiyan appears before Goku and Vegeta: Broly. How can a Saiyan—a member of the proud warrior race that was completely annihilated after the destruction of Planet Vegeta—appear here on Earth? With Frieza’s return from hell, a fierce battle awaits the three mighty Saiyans who have followed completely different destinies.

For decades, many have wanted to see Broly, the “Dragon Ball Z” film antagonist brought to the the official universe.

And now, creator Toriyama Akira has brought Broly on officially in the 20th film, “Dragon Ball Super: Broly – The Movie”.  After the events of the “Dragon Ball Super” animated series, Goku and Vegeta must take on the most powerful Saiyan yet, Broly.

And unlike Goku and Vegeta who can transform into different levels to achieve increased power, Broly is somehow able to tap into unknown power and he carries his father’s hatred toward the Saiyan race as well!  And with Frieza back and continuing where he last left off, he figures that Broly would be a great way to finally defeat Goku and Vegeta, so he can conquer the planet!

Will Goku and Vegeta have the power to defeat him?

What is “Dragon Ball Super: Broly – The Movie” about?

With the completion of the hugely popular anime series “Dragon Ball Z”, while a new story was created titled “Dragon Ball GT” (1996-1997) and not based on Toriyama Akira’s previous work, Toriyama would return to create an overall plot outline for a new series titled “Dragon Ball Super” produced by Toei Animation.

The series is considered as the true sequel to “Dragon Ball Z” and would take place four years after the DBZ storyline.

The series began airing in Japan on July 2015 and concluded on March 2018 with a total of 131 episodes having aired.  As the series ended, an animated film was announced and receiving a lot of hype and fanfare as “Dragon Ball” creator Toriyama Akira has found a way to bring the antagonist Broly into the official Dragon Ball universe.

As Broly has appeared in three “Dragon Ball” films as the primary antagonist, because his role was simply only in film and has never appeared in a manga or anime series, his character has long been debated if he was canon.  Fortunately, Toriyama Akira has now made it official and with this film being part of the canon, Broly is now officially introduced.  And to do that, a new storyline featuring his introduction and background will be featured in this 20th animated feature film.

As a person who grew up watching “Dragon Ball” and watching “Dragon Ball Z” episodes as they were released in Japan, one of the most awesome stories involved the super strong Saiyan antagonist Broly, a character who was only featured in three animated films.

While the Broly films were action-packed and the first film “Broly the Legendary Super Saiyan” introduced Paragus and Broly and established a timeline, along with the other two films, these animated films were debated if they could be called canon because they were never brought to the manga series nor a TV series.

These three stories were more Koyama Takao than Toriyama Akira, the creator of the “Dragon Ball” series and so in order to bring Broly to the official universe, “Dragon Ball Super: Broly – The Movie” was created.

A new timeline was established and what we have is less about Broly’s father, Paragus trying to create a new world.  This time it’s about a father who despises King Vegeta and the Saiyan’s for exiling his baby son to another planet, because his power levels were higher than Vegeta.

But the film has an emotional bond and shows how one with good intentions, could actually create a monster.  For Paragus, his vengeance has blinded him to make Broly the most powerful being, but unfortunately with his unstable power, has made him madly unstable.  To have the power of a Saiyan who has turned to an ape due to the sun, but in Broly’s case, transforming but yet in human form.  He is unable to control it and Paragus’ way to control his son is through shocking him.

But Broly is not a bad guy, he was just raised the way he was, under his father’s direction and that was out of rage, hate despite Paragus caring for his son, but his own way.

And the series manages to weave Frieza, who was revived in “Dragon Ball Super” to going back to his deadly, planet conquering ways and like before, him trying to find a way to defeat Goku and Vegeta.

While the film maintains it’s action-packed storyline, “Dragon Ball Super: Broly – The Movie” is probably my favorite “Dragon Ball” film by far!  “Dragon Ball” films are always about the action, Broly films always feature high-impact action, but they managed to feature a touching storyline and also details about the destruction of the Planet Saiyan but most importantly, Broly’s storyline and his relationship with his father was well-written.

And I can’t help but wait and see how Toriyama Akira takes Broky in the future now that Broly is now officially part of the “Dragon Ball” universe.

Overall, this is the best “Dragon Ball” film by far!  The best Broly film and for “Dragon Ball” fans, this is an animated film that is highly recommended!
