IZ*ONE’s “Suki to Iwasetai” receives 1.74 million views in 24 hours, the highest first-day views on YouTube for Japan debut music video for a female idol group?

IZ*ONE’s “Suki to Iwasetai” has received 1.74 million views for its debut music video in Japan for its first 24 hours.  Having the highest first-day views on YouTube for debut music video for a female idol group.  By the 27th hour, the music video has now surpassed 2 million views.

Idol group Keyakizaka46 has the record of 1.9 million views in 24-hours with “Garasu wo Ware” (their sixth single).

In Japan, we know of the big idol groups (in terms of financial sales), YouTube was not around when Morning Musume first debuted and AKB48’s first major hit music video on YouTube was their 17th single “Heavy Rotation” and their largest views was for “Koisuru Fortune Cookie” (their 32nd single with over 163 million views), while their 2006 debut single “Sakura no Hanabiratachi” was not a hit single (also, YouTube was not as popular in Japan as the streaming service started in February 2005 and would be bought by Google in 2006).

SKE48’s 2009 debut single “Tsuyoki Mono yo”, Momoiro Clover Z’s debut single in 2010 was “Ikuze! Kaitō Shōjo”, NMB48’s 2011 debut single “Zetsumetsu Kurokami Shōjo”, Babymetal’s 2011 debut single “Doki Doki ☆ Morning”, HKT48’s 2013 debut single “Suki! Suki! Skip!”, Nogizaka46’s 2012 debut single “Guruguru Curtain” and NGT48’s 2017 debut single “Seishun Dokei” did not receive over a million YouTube views for their first 24-hours.  While Keyakizaka46’s 2016 debut single “Silent Majority” received 236,000 views for its first 24-hours.

It’s also important to note that many Japanese labels took the approach of blocking their viewing of their videos internationally and also posted short versions of the music video until several months after a single’s release, then posting the full version of the music video much later.

As for TWICE, Twice’s “One More Time” was their debut single in Japan which had amazing views on YouTube, but it was not their first Japanese music video.  The first Japanese music video was “Signal”, in which a short version of the video was released and a Japanese version of their Korean hit song which was released several months before “One More Time”.

IZ*ONE’s 2019 “Suki to Iwasetai” was released to all regions in the world, not released as as short version and as of right now, appears to have the #1 highest first-day views for a Japan debut music video by a female idol group. This still has to be officially confirmed.

As for the highest J-Pop group debut music video, we are not sure where IZ*ONE places in the top 10 at this time (considering there are a lot of groups in Japan, this may be challenging to obtain this information).  As for combined idol group, including the Johnny’s boy bands, that would be also a bit tough.

In Korea, IZ*ONE’s “La Vie en Rose” music video becomes the most viewed K-Pop group debut MV in its first day of release.

The previous #1 most viewed music video by a debut group was Stray Kids with their song “District 9” back in March 26, 2018 with 4,274,649 views.

The top 3 prior to IZ*ONE’s release were:

  1. Stray Kids – District 9 – 4,274,649 (March 26, 2018)
  2. Wanna One – Energetic – 4,034,795 (August 7, 2017)
  3. Blackpink – Boombayah – 3,328,090 (August 8, 2016)

By the 24th hour, IZ*ONE received a total of 4,559,202 views surpassing Stray Kids to take the #1 spot.
