The most watched drama is the NHK drama “Oshin” which was shown on April 1983 through March 1984 will be rebroadcast on NHK’s BS Premium.

The drama attracted a 62.9% rating and it is estimated that 98% of Japanese viewers have tuned into at least one of the show’s three hundred episodes and it was also broadcasted in 73 countries around the world.

The drama was so popular that the show has been analyzed and was mentioned in a speech of former US President Ronald Reagan.

The show is based on 300 letters solicited by a magazine about women’s lives in pre-economic Japan.

The show is about a girl named Oshin who suffered hardships in the early years of the century but overcame every obstacle to become, in her middle age, an owner of a supermarket chain.

The drama showed the character progress from her life journey of age seven to age eighty-three.

In August 28, 2000 a special three episode drama titled “2000-nen no Monogatari” featured on TBS featured Matsushima Nanako in a drama to commemorate the turn of the century.

Many tuned in to watch if there were any similarities to this special to the popular drama of the early 80’s but of course, it was different but it did show the progression of three women in different era’s. The special did get high ratings and it was eventually voted best drama of the 2000 even though it was only three episodes long.
