The average audience rating of the 70th NHK Kouhaku Uta Gassen which was broadcast on December 31, 2019 received a 34.7% rating from 7:15 p.m. in the Kanto area. After 9:00 p.m., the rating dipped to 27.3% with the average rating of 37.3%.
This was the New Year Eve special’s lowest two-part rating since the two-part rating system of “Kouhaku Uta Gassen” was adopted in 1989.
Back in 1963, “Kouhaku Uta Gassen” recorded an 81.4% audience rating but fell below 60% since 1986. It fell below 40% in 2004.
In 2015, the ratings were 34.8%/39.2%, in 2016, 35.1%/40.2%, in 2017, 35.8%/39.4% and in 2018, 37%/41.5%.
While the special received an average rating of 37.3%, it’s the after 9:00 p.m. that NHK may have to figure out how to win viewers, considering there is more competition on television and online taking away viewership.
