Ongaku Cafe (The ’90s): SMAP – Oretachi ni Asu wa Aru (November 1995)

SMAP’s 19th CD single continues the mature sound of the group.  Overall, “Oretachi ni Asu wa Aru” is a pretty fun single but it all comes down to the listener and if they enjoy this more mature side of the group.

Reviewed back in November 1995

After the success of SMAP’s “Donaii Koto”, the group is back with their 19th single “Oretachi ni Asu wa Aru”, the theme song to Takuya Kimura’s new drama “Jinsei wa Jojouda”.

The single continues the group’s more mature sound as they incorporate more musicians and produce a more funkier, jazzier type of sound. The track is very catchy and vocals by Takuya Kimura is the highlight of the single in my opinion. But a fun single overall.

The coupling track “Konomachide Imamo Kimiwa” (which translates to “You are in this town still?”) and also employs a funkier, jazzy type of sound. It’s a pretty good single and Mori and Kimura’s voice seem the most dominant in this track.

Overall, this single is probably going to be subjective as there are many fans who miss their more pop sound and dislike the more mature sound they have had lately. Personally, I’ve grown to enjoy it. So, if you are a fan of this new and mature SMAP, definitely give “Oretachi ni Asu wa Aru” a chance!
