Back in 1973, an idol trio known as Candies burst onto the music scene.

Composed of Ran (Ito Ran), Sue (Tanaka Yoshiko) and Miki (Fujimura Miki), the trio were popular among teenagers and young adults and alongside, Pink Lady, they were female pop groups that were on the forefront of Japanese music.

But to the surprise of many, as the group were finally inching closer to a #1 single with their release of their 17th single “Hohoemi Gaeshi”, at the height of their popularity, the group decided that they wanted to be ordinary girls and by in 1978, Candies achieved their first #1 hit single on the Oricon Charts and were performing their farewell concert that April.

Despite only being together for five years, Candies released 14 albums and 18 singles.

It’s important to note that Candies have a plethora of greatest hits released in Japan.

So, if you want the best release, you will want their box set “CANDIES HISTORY~Best Selection Box 1973-1978” or the “Candies Time Capsule” release (which is way too expensive for a lot of people but it does come with 20 CDs), but for those who want their A-sided singles, then you will definitely want to check out “Candies Golden Best Complete Single Collection”.  If you want both the A-sided and B-sided singles, then I recommend the Candies “Golden * Idol” release.

The release of this album in 2011 was no doubt somewhat of a memorial to CANDIES after the death of Tanaka Yoshiko (Sue), who passed away from breast cancer.

While many waited for a reunion, unfortunately it wasn’t possible as the three had different lives after Candies, each were married, Sue as an award winning actress, as with Ran (who married singer Mizutani Yutaka), while Miki had a good run as a solo artist but focused on becoming a wife and mother.

But Miki and Ran were both there to deliver the eulogy to Sue at her funeral ceremony.

As for “Candies Golden Best Complete Single Collection”, you get their debut single “Anata ni Muchu” all the way to “Tsubasa”, a song written by Ran for their final concert as the group’s farewell song and released after the group disbanded in April of 1978.

You get to hear how the single began with Sue as the main vocalist and then to Ran with “Toshishita na Otokonoko”.  The group made their first top 3 single on the Oricon Charts with their 9th single “Haru Ichiban” and would continue to release a string of top 10 hits and Miki was given a chance to be the lead vocalist for the 16th single “Wana”.

So, for the most part, you get all 18 A-sided singles on this single disc collection with the lyrics. Great for those who want the 18 single songs, but if you want the A & B-sided tracks, go for the “Golden Idol” release and if you want the best releases, then definitely go for “CANDIES HISTORY~Best Selection Box 1973-1978” or the “Candies Time Capsule” .

Overall, a solid collection but there are better collections that have been released of the group.
