Space Battleship Tiramisu – Season 1 + OVAs (a Neo-Tokyo 2099 Anime on Blu-ray Review) (2018)

I thought “Space Battleship Tiramisu” was going to be a food-based comedy in space, but it turned out way wilder and crazier than I could even expect. In a way, it’s quite idiotic, but somehow I am always open to crazy, unique or idiotic anime series. And if you are as well, then “Space Battleship Tiramisu” is for you!

The Earth Union is locked in a massive galactic war. Ace pilot Subaru Ichinose—socially awkward and plagued by an intense, almost sexual love for food—carries the fate of humanity on his shoulders.

Back in 2015, writer Miyakawa Satoshi and illustrator Ito Kei created a manga series titled “Uchu Senkan Tiramisu” (Space Battleship Tiramisu) which was serialized in Shinchosha’s “Kurage Bunch”.

The series would eventually be adapted into an anime series in 2018 courtesy of GONZO and the anime series has now been released on Blu-ray and DVD courtesy of Funimation.

Each episode is very short (about seven minutes long).

The mecha anime series is a comedy-driven series about Ichinose Subaru, a mecha pilot for the Durandal F and is based in the Space Battleship Tiramisu.

And the setting is during a time when the Earth Union is in a galactic war.

Ichinose dislikes everyone and spends almost all his time in the fighter’s cockpit, eating his food and doing other adult-like things.

He doesn’t like to shower in the men’s room because he is subconscious of people that may make fun of him because his nipples are located in weird places.

His main friend that he talks to often is his pubic hair and a robot named PAC2-AR who pretends to be cute.  And an animal named Bitsy who gets too big, so Ichinose dumps him off in space.

One day, Subaru comes in contact with the brother he thought was dead, Isuzu.

VIDEO:

“Space Battleship Tiramisu” is presented in 1080p High Definition. The animation is vibrant and colorful. But as expected with many animated TV shows, there is a hint of softness. For the most part, character designs are done well and background art is also well-done.  If anything, great quality from GONZO as expected!

AUDIO & SUBTITLES:

“Space Battleship Tiramisu” is presented with a English Dolby True HD 5.1 and a Japanese stereo soundtrack. Dialogue and music are crystal clear for the series.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

“Space Battleship Tiramisu” comes with no special features but Funimation trailers.

EXTRAS

“Space Battleship Tiramisu” comes with a Blu-ray slipcover, the Blu-ray and Funimation digital code.

I wish I could describe what kind of “Space Battleship Tiramisu” is but it may be a bit difficult.

For the most part, it is perverted, farcical and crazy.

The series tends to poke fun on mecha anime series, for the fact that the main protagonist Ichinose Subaru is not the heroic type.

He is a loner, he thinks bad about people, he has no friends, he loves to eat food in his cockpit (including eating food on himself) and he takes care of himself (sexually) inside his cockpit, to the fact that his best friend is his pubic hair, which he believes is talking to him.

Each episode is about seven minutes long and just discussing a synopsis of each episode may surprise for some people.

For example, in episode 5 “Drifting Without Side Dishes”, he recalls a childhood memory of his mom making rice with salt and putting in on top of her fingers.   This leads to Subaru thinking of ways to eat rice with salt, so he puts the rice on his sweaty body and helmet and feast on it.

Episode 2 is “My Cute Puppy/Do Not Disturb” is about Subaru wanting to keep a pet, which he thinks is a puppy.  His Captain tells him no because those animals grow too big.  But Subaru doesn’t believe him and sure enough, the puppy grows nearly 20 times its size.  Subaru has no choice but to launch his pet into space.

These are the type of episodes that are featuring in “Space Battleship Tiramisu”.  Some will enjoy it, some will find the series to be stupid and many will find it weird and crazy.

At first, reading about the anime series, I thought “Space Battleship Tiramisu” was going to be a food-based comedy in space, but it turned out way wilder and crazier than I could even expect.  In a way, it’s quite idiotic, but somehow I am always open to crazy, unique or idiotic anime series.
