Before there was “Mobile Suit Gundam”, there was “Muteki Chojin Zambot 3”

As “Kidou Senshi Gundam” (Mobile Suit Gundam) celebrates its 40th anniversary, and a lot of attention has been focused on director Tomino Yoshiyuki, before there was Gundam, there was “Muteki Chojin Zambot 3″ (Invincible Super Zambot 3”) which was broadcast on television from 1977-1978.

The 23-episode anime series from Sunrise was a series in which mecha robots fought against a mysterious entity known as Gaizok and remaining survivors from the planet Beal escaped to Earth.

The survivors feature three families: Jin, Kamie and Kamikita and each have vehicles that can combine to become the mighty Zambot 3.  But while each family try to protect their new home, the other families blaime the Jin family for the invasion.

Tomino Yoshiku established his style to kill everyone, including popular protagonists from “Muteki Chojin Zambot 3” eventually leading to that style as seen in “Kidou Senshi Gundam”.
