TRF member DJ KOO was recently interviewed by yomiDr. about his surgical procedure to prevent a subarachnoid hemorrhage.

DJ KOO thought he would never any major health challenges, as he doesn’t drink liquor, doesn’t smoke and never had any major illnesses.

Since the 1980s, he has been active as a DJ at clubs and discos in Tokyo and in the ’90s, TRF was among the most popular music groups topping the charts.

But in 2017, DJ Koo was on a medical variety TV show where he had an MRI done.  The MRI found a bulge in a blood vessel in the brain. A cerebral aneurysm with a diameter of 9/8 mm had caused pressure and if it ruptured, it would have led to a subarachnoid hemorrhage, which can lead to death or serious injury.

According to the Japanese Society of Neurosurgery, 1.69% of bulges around 7-9 mm in diameter and 4.37% around 10 mm can burst within a year.

After the television program, while receiving information from doctors, DJ KOO called his wife and told her what doctors found.  His wife and daughter immediately started to look on a lot of information on it and treatment.

They found out about the “clipping technique” in which the blood flow is blocked by craniotomy (opening of the skull) and the other was “coil embolization” in which a catheter is inserted from the base of the foot or the artery of the arm and a thin wire is put inside the aneurysm.

DJ KOO had to decide which direction to go and what he thought about was how long he would be in treatment and away from work, so he leaned towards coil embolization.

DJ Koo had surgery which took about six and a half hours and when he woke up, everything was over.

The cerebral aneurysm was fixed and there is no risk of rupture.  The moment DJ Koo awakened, his daughter embraced him.

DJ Koo said that he once took life for granted and he has changed his lifestyle, the way he eats and eats more vegetables.  Even his wife also prepares seasonable vegetables for him to eat.

But his new lifestyle does not mean just taking care of his body but also cherishing his family, friends and music.
