In 2013, writer Fuse and illustrator Mitz Vah created a fantasy light novel series titled “Tensei Shitarai Slime Datta Ken” (That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime).

The story was serialized online between 2013-2016 on a user-generated novel publishing website Shosetsuka ni Naro and it was acquired by Micro Magazine, who published it as a first light novel in 2014.

A total of 15 light novels have been created and a manga adaptation in 2015 and an anime adaptation were created.

The anime series received an adaptation in March 2019 courtesy of 8 bit and now the series will be released on Blu-ray courtesy of Funimation.

The series revolves around Mikami Satoru, a 37-year-old office worker living Tokyo who has no girlfriend. He receives marriage advice from his friend Tamura and after meeting him and his partner Miho, he is stabbed to death by a robber.

He is later reincarnated as a slime who can devour other creatures and obtain their abilities.

It happens that the first thing Satoru meets is an acient dragon named Veldora who had been sealed in the cave centuries ago.

Because Veldora has been lonely and Satoru becomes his friend, Satoru is named by Veldora as Rimuru Tempest and in order to break the seal, Veldora allows Rimuru to swallow him and Rimuru to gain Veldora’s powers.

While Rimuru leaves, he discovers a group of weak goblins who are scared to fight against Direwolves and Rimura decides to lend the group a chance of survival by defending themselves and fighting back against the Direwolves.

Through his adventures of helping those in need and acquiring new powers, while a new threat looms in the world.

VIDEO:

“That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime” is presented in 1080p High Definition (16×9 HD Native). For the most part, the animation is very good and a lot of thought went by 8 bit into this TV series in creating this fantasy world. A lot of shading went into

AUDIO & SUBTITLES:

“That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime” features a wonderful soundtrack on Blu-ray. The series is presented in Dolby TrueHD 5.1 (English) and Dolby TrueHD 5.1 (Japanese). Both soundtracks are well-acted and as Okasaki Miho was wonderful as the voice of Rimuru on the Japanese soundtrack, I have to give a thumbs up to English dub veteran Brittney Karbowski for a wonderful performance!

There is often moments where I hear about an anime series and the hype that surrounds it that I take my time and wait for it to come out on Blu-ray, because I want to watch it all versus wait impatiently in a weekly manner.

From anime series such as “Sword Art Online”, “My Hero Academia” and even classic, long running series such as “One Piece”.

That’s how things went for “That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime”, I heard so much hype from friends that “I have to watch it!” and I wanted to wait and finally I can say that I watched the first half of season one and I can easily say that…

I love this anime series!

I have to first say that I was skeptical at first because when I saw images of blue slime, somehow the video game “Dragon Quest” was all I could think of.

But this series turned out to be way better than I was expecting.

A story about a human guy who is killed and is reincarnated as a slime in a new fantasy world. He uses his intelligence, strategy (from all those video games) and for the most part, using his skills acquired as a slime to help people but also to help those in need.

It’s always interesting to see how people look at the protagonist Rimuru Tempest and think he is defenseless when in fact, he becomes more powerful as the series progresses and the series is well-written and the animation is also well-done.

But it’s the characters that make this series entertaining. From the warriors who fight, the characters used for comedy situations but for the most part, a group who are looked as underdogs, and becoming a formidable team thanks to the leadership of a slime.

In volume 2, we have the continuing Orc arc in which Gabiru’s sister begs for Rimuru an dhis group to rescue the chieftain the lizardmen, this leads to Rimuru confronting Gelmud, the one who is responsible for creating the Orc Lord.

We also have Rimuru working hard to form the Jura Forest Alliance, to unite various races to live in harmony, which starts to cause the Demon Lords concern as they view Rimuru’s influence threatening their balance of power.

If anything, you can’t help but root for Rimuru, a slime which many underestimate as weak but many have seen his strategical brilliance but also how he cares for everyone and his fight for peace.  And to see these alliances believe in him when taking on adversaries that are very tough to beat.

Both the English and Japanese soundtrack features wonderful voice acting and the fact that the series comes with two audio commentaries and a video commentary plus a few other extras, makes this anime series a wonderful anime on Blu-ray release.

Overall, “That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime” is no doubt one of the most entertaining anime series I have watched in recent years and I can only hope for a second season.  Definitely recommended!
