Manga Reviews (2010-2019): Don’t Toy with Me, Miss Nagatoro Vol. 2 by Nanashi (a Neo-Tokyo Manga Review)

The tone has changed since “Miss Nagatoro” volume 1, where the amount of bullying was blatant and hurtful, volume 2 had much less of that and is much more easier to follow, to enjoy, and now making the reader wonder where mangaka Nanashi will take it.

Nagatoro is back and toying with Senpai more than ever…and the two only seem to be getting closer to something more than “just friends.” Armed with a lollipop, a bathing suit, and an ear-piercing gun, Nagatoro just might send Senpai—and herself—over the edge.

Back in 2011, Nanashi (774) created “Ijiranaide, Nagatoro-san” (Don’t Toy With Me, Miss Nagattoro) on Pixiv.

The actual webmanga series would begin its serialization in “Magazine Pocket” and no available in North America by Vertical Comics.

The series begins with an shy, introverted artist who accidentally dropped his artwork in front of the popular Nagatoro and her friends.

Immediately, Nagatoro begins calling the artist “senpai” and because of his lack of social skills, nor having a girlfriend, Nagatoro tries to explain to him that his manga is too unrealistic because he has never been with a girl, never had a girlfriend and she calls him and his main character in his manga as “pathetic”.

And Nagatoro immediately starts bullying and pestering Nagatoro to the point of tears.

And now the artist must deal with Nagatoro each and everyday, as she makes fun of him by trying to flirt or use sexual teasing in order to make fun of him.

For volume 2, my impression of the manga has changed a bit.

I was a bit unnerved by the amount of bullying that Nagatoro would have towards the artist.  Wanting to make him cry, forcing him to do things that he doesn’t want to do.

But now, with volume 2, while she still teases him, the manga does show a few things that make it much more appealing than the first volume.

For one, you can see the artist trying to make an effort to communicate with Nagatoro.  But the biggest difference is now, we have the introduction of Nagatoro’s two female friends who are also trying to get the attention of the artist which now we see a sense of jealousy from Nagatoro and how she reacts to her friends when they try to get close to him.

Perhaps Nagatoro looks at the artist as her exclusive buddy that she can torment or perhaps….just perhaps, she always wants to be near him (and make fun of him) because she actually cares and likes him?

To be truthful, I don’t know where Nanashi will take this manga, but I did find volume 2 to be much more entertaining as we are seeing these two probably becoming friends or at least, the artist becoming much more tolerant towards her.

But the tone has changed since “Miss Nagatoro” volume 1, where the amount of bullying was blatant and hurtful, volume 2 had much less of that and is much more easier to follow, to enjoy, and now making the reader wonder where mangaka Nanashi will take it.

So, for volume 2, I’m giving it a thumbs up and we’ll see how the story evolves with volume 3!
