NOTE: THIS IS A DIGITAL REVIEW NOT THE BLU-RAY REVIEW

From P.A. Works comes an original anime series titled “Fairy Gone”.

A total of 24 episodes aired from April to December 2019 and now the first part of the first season was released on Blu-ray courtesy of Funimation.

The series is set after the War of Unification, and all nations in the continent of Eastald are forced to united under a single ruler.

During the War of Unification, special soldiers were implanted with Fairy Organs which allowed them to summon Fairies to fight under their command. Both sides had their own Fair Soldiers  but nine years after the war, there are rogue Fairy Soldiers and criminals taking advantage of the instability of the continent.

The government agency known as “Dorothea” is formed for the sole purpose to fight against illegal Fairy users.

The series revolves around Marlya Noel, a survivor of the Ray Dawn Massacre of Suna Village. Marlya was called a “Little Disaster” due to her parents and guardian dying.  Her closest friend was Veronica Thorn, who has not been seen since the Massacre in the village.

As she grows up, like others from Suna village, she has the ability to see fairies (which normal humans do not have).  She is also known for he rifle skills and even joined the Biaklay Mafia family in hopes she would reunite with her friend Veronica.

One day, while at a black market auction, she was possessed by the fairy Ash Cloud, and without being implanted, now has the ability to summon a fairy.

But because of this incident, she is reunited with Veronica, who has been seeking revenge against Ray Dawn. Unlike Marlya who was possessed and used her Fairy Power for good, Veronica was possessed by the fairy Blood Daughter and has become an assassin for Albastora.

Veronica tells Marlya that she is not the same person and for her to not try to find her.

Marlya knows she needs to find Veronica and find out what happened to her.  While in the meantime, she decides to join Dorothea and work alongside her partner, a former Fairy Soldier named Free Underbar who has the Fairy, Red Hood.

And the two go on missions, alongside their fellow Dorothea teammates, but also through the process, Marlya must find the strength to stop doubting herself and believe in her team.

My first introduction to “Fairy Gone” was while I was at Anime Japan.

Visuals alone, the anime looked very cool and if anything, I couldn’t wait until this anime would be released, so I can finally check it out!

The anime series is more or less about Marlya Noel, a woman with impeccable shooting skills, who also happens to now have a Fairy which she uses for battle.

Despite having talent, Marlya is also a person with low self esteem, having lost her parents in the massacre and her guardian passing away, many called her “little disaster” to the point that she believed that if she got to close with anyone, she would end up killing them.

And once an older Marlya joins Dorothea, to stop those who are using their Fairy powers for evil, she is thrown into a series of events which include being reunited with her childhood friend Veronica Thorn, who is now an assassin for Albastora and a person her group fights against.

She also has an extreme hatred towards Ray Dawn (as Veronica Thorn is also on a mission to kill him) for murdering everyone from their Suna village.  Ray Dawn felt that those who possess Fairy powers and were too powerful, shouldn’t live.  Also villagers who can see them without aid of special equipment.

With Marlya and Veronica being the only survivors, what happens when Marlya, now a member of Dorothea, must work with Ray Dawn?

For the most part, “Fairy Gone” is a very good anime series that starts off with building characters and showing us the challenges that the Dorothea team experience and how not everything goes their way.

The anime series shows how characters have their own challenges, no one is perfect and the times they live in, is not the best.  It’s also an action series where we get to see the team take on high level individuals using their  fair powers illegally and seeing the two sides go into battle.

But the episodes also serve as a building block for Marlya as she learns to become a team member but also will need to believe in herself and her team.

If you are looking for a cool action-drive anime series, definitely give “Fairy Gone” a try!  Recommended!
