Please note that I am reviewing the Digital Version and not the Blu-ray:

It was 2017 when mangaka Inagaki Riichiro (known for writing “Eyeshield 21”) and manhwa artist Boichi created the manga series “Dr. Stone” which would be serialized in “Weekly Shonen Jump” and as of October 2020, a total of 17 graphic novels printed.

The manga series would win the 64th “Shogakukan Manga Award” for the Shonen category in 2019.

In 2019, TMS Entertainment would produce a 24-episode anime series titled “Dr. Stone” with a second season slated for a January 2021.

And now “Dr. Stone” was released on Blu-ray and DVD courtesy of Funimation with the first 12 episodes having been released.

The series begins with an introduction of teenagers.  Ishigami Senku is an intelligent genius who excels in science, his best friend Oki Taiju is strong but is a pacifist and in love with the kind Ogawa Yuzuriha.

While Oki was to declare his love to Yuzuriha, a mysterious flash of light petrified all living things.

For Ishigami Senku, he is suddenly revived and immediately studies petrified humans to determine what caused it but if there is also a cure.  Also, to realize that they have been petrified for over 3,700 years.

Ishigami manages to find a way to revive people with nitric acid and is able to revive Oki and Ogawa, but also reviving the famous martial artist Shishio Tsukasa.

But Ishigami knows that with Shishio’s fiery attitude, it may be a detriment.  And when Shishio starts talking about rebuilding the new world without those who corrupt the world, it goes against Ishigami’s views and that is to revive everyone, no matter who they are.  To rescue humanity using science.

And unfortunately, this has led a division and now Shishio is intent of killing those who go against his beliefs, including Ishigami, Oki and Ogawa.  Realizing that Shishio is a madman, can they survive against them?

The first time I came across “Dr. Stone” was through the petrified promotions at the TMS Entertainment booth at AnimeJapan 2019.

Needless to say, the concept of the anime series was quite interesting but now having watched the first half of the first season, the anime series was exciting and I was quite captivated with it.

It was a very interesting concept about all life on the planet being petrified and seeing Senku and friends being revived, but while in danger, they bring back to life a famous martial artist named Shishio Tsukasa, but as they travel together, they start to learn that Shishio wants to use the technology of reviving only those who deserve to live.

Shishio starts punching and destroying petrified people, which is pretty much murder. Shishio doesn’t care and when he starts using the premise of eliminating those that shouldn’t be brought back, he is seen destroy petrified of families, parents and children.

And thus showing how this awesome fighter is quite demented and crazy.  And with Senku and friends determined to use science to bring all people back, this now puts them in Shishio’s target.

As the first half features character development and more or less introducing the four characters, the second half features Senku discovering a tribe of people already living on the planet and decides to use this to create a Kingdom of Science.

I really enjoyed this anime but this is only the first half of the first season, so it left me wanting to see more!

It’s important to note that I watched the digital version on Funimation.com and watched it both with the original Japanese soundtrack and with English dubs and both are fantastic.

But if you are looking for an anime series that combines humor, action and science, definitely give “Dr. Stone” a chance!  You will not be disappointed and it’s no doubt one of my favorite anime series on Blu-ray for 2020!
