Tokyo Second State of Emergency: What you need to know

The second state of emergency was declared in Japan on Thursday.

As of right now, the prefectures affected are: Tokyo, Chiba, Kanagawa and Saitama

So, what will happen?

  • Restaurants and Bars must stop serving alcohol at 7 om and close an hour later, except for take-out and delivery
  • Theme Parks and Gyms must shorten hours
  • Telework is encouraged in order to reduce commuter traffic
  • Avoid nonessential outings, especially during the evening

There are no punishments if someone doesn’t follow the rules and the rules this time around is much more lax than before.  Schools will also remain open (Note: Local education boards can close them but there are no plans at this time).

How are things looking in terms of COVID-19 in Japan?

Tokyo reported 2,392 COVID-19 cases Friday, a day after the record high of 2,447 cases.  More than 7,800 new cases were confirmed nationwide.
