Hamamatsu City becomes the #1 Gyoza Town over Utsunomiya City and Miyazaki City

When it comes to gyoza, there are numerous areas throughout Japan that are known for its gyoza and the competition of being on top for gyoza is no doubt serious.

In fact, in Japan, depending who you talk to, the discussion of gyoza can lead to debates of who makes the best gyoza.

The eastern Japanese city of Utsunomiya in Tochigi Prefecture is known for its many gyoza restaurants and has pride in claiming itself as the Gyoza capital.

Kyoto and Osaka are also areas that claim to make the better gyoza.  Especially Hamamatsu City in Shizuoka and Miyazaki in southwestern Japan.

In fact, the average person spends Y1917 on gyoza dumplings versus Y1886 in Utsunomiya and Y1635 in Kyoto Miyazaki also ranked #1 for the average number of times households bought takeout gyoza in a month.

A household survey held by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications was announced on January 5th, the purchase amount of gyoza per household was 3,693 yen in Utsunomiya City and 3,766 yen in Hamamatsu City.  In third place was Miyazaki City at 3,670 yen.

Hamamatsu City has surpassed Utsunomiya City by a close margin of 73 yen.

Mayor Sato Eiichi of Utsunomiya City commented, “I would like to continue to work together with our citizens to further make Utsunomiya the Gyoza Town”.

Hamamatsu Gyoza is known as a local gourmet in which gyoza is place in a circle with bean sprouts set in the middle.
