Not only is she completely not what he expected, but her real life has a frightening number of cross-overs with his own! And when it turns out that his grandmother is just crazy about Chizuru, it’s not like he can just swap her out for a different model! Or can he? Will Kazuya and Chizuru’s relationship progress beyond a “goods purchased” mode? And what happens if Kazuya’s ex-girlfriend decides to re-enter the picture? Find out when love and romance are delivered on an installment plan in RENT-A-GIRLFRIEND.

In Japan, the ongoing manga series “Kanojo, Okasrishimasu” (Rent-A-Girlfriend) by Miyajima Reiji which began serialization since July 2017, received an anime adaptation by TMS Entertainment from July to September 2020.

With a second season announced for July 2022, the first season of the animated series has been released on Blu-ray courtesy of Sentai Filmworks.

The series revolves around a 20-year-old college student named Kinoshita Kazuya who was dumped by his girlfriend Nanami Nami after dating for a month.

Kinoshita decides to rent a girlfriend, Mizuhara Chizuru to make himself feel better, despite being in love with Nami.

But what was supposed to be temporary, became an ongoing lie when Kinoshita’s grandmother meets Chizuru and Chizuru’s grandmother, who happens to be at the same hospital as Kinoshita’s grandmother (and both are close friends) are now supportive of their relationship and wants to make them happy.

Not wanting to break their grandmother’s hearts, the two decide they will continue the ruse, but Kinoshita will come clean and tell the truth soon.

In addition, it appears that Nami is Kinoshita’s neighbor at the apartment complex.  And while Nami expects to be paid each time she pretends, and Kinoshita continues to become even more broke.

But wanting to keep up appearances that he’s doing well, he continues renting out Chizuru in order to make his friends and his ex think that he’s doing quite well.  And everyone, including Nami are surprised that Kinoshita has found a beautiful girlfriend.

But Chizukru starts to see Kinoshita’s heart and how kind of a man he is.  And while Chizuru tends to be tsundere towards him and Kinoshita keeps telling himself he likes Nami, both start to grow closer to each other the longer they spend time together.

But what happens when Nami becomes jealous and what happens when another rental girlfriend wants to be with Kinoshita?

For the most part, the series is entertaining because it begins with tsundere relationship, as Chizuru is helping him out, sometimes out of pity because of how Kinoshita has low self-esteem but also hoping she can boost his spirits.  But the more she spends time with him, she sees his good points.  But because she is a professional at her job, there are many times when you think things will go one way, it goes the other.  So, it’s a series not easy to predict and I like that.

With a second season announced, not sure if the series will continue with Kinoshita Kazuya and Mizuhara Chizuru’s storyline but we are introduced to Sakurasawa Sumi, a very shy rental girlfriend and while a spin-off manga titled “Rent-A-(Really Shy!)-Girlfriend” series being released, there are only two manga volumes released from 2020-2021, so I’m really excited to see what will happen for season two.
