First it was “City Pop” with Takeuchi Mariya’s ’80s song “Plastic Love” creating a fan sensation of music lovers all over the world checking out retro J-Pop but in China, “Showa Retro” makeup style is starting to become popular among teens and young adults.

So far that makeup from the ’80s are now being imitated by Chinese girls in their teens and 20s. With SNS accounts on how one can achieve the Nakamori Akina-style make-up of the ’80s and ’90s.

So, how did the “Showa Retro” boom become a thing?

One of the driving forces is Ruby, a beauty influencer on China’s SNS Weibo account, who has 7.8 million followers and Ju Jingyi, a former member of the idol group SHN48, who is active mainly in Shanghai. And now beauty influencers have caught on even on YouTube.
