On December 15th, Don Quijote posted a tweet that it would be changing the official mascot character from “Donpen” (the well-known penguin) to Dojou-chan (which is a katakana “do”) and even featured a commercial.

Needless to say, this angered many people who grew up with Donpen and were ready to show the company that changing the mascot was not a good idea.

Comments were such as:

Children will cry if they see this

It’s like losing Doraemon

Donpen is much better.

Donpen-kun… Are you graduating?  (crying emoji)

According to Don Quixote’s public relations, after the announcement of Donpen’s graduation, there was a great response, and at 19:39, announced the withdrawal of Donpen’s graduation in a tweet.

“It has been decided that ‘Donpen’ will continue to be cast as the official character. Once again, all PPIH Group employees will love Donpen forever, with strong feelings for Donpen.”

In addition, when the editorial department confirmed with the public relations on the afternoon of the 16th, they received a reply that it was “not prepared” for the backlash.

Personally, we thought it was a publicity stunt.  Even the company president Yoshida Naoki tweeted, “I don’t understand the situation either, so I will check with the relevant departments”.

Yoshida then wrote, “Due to the response from many people, we are currently holding an urgent internal meeting. Please wait for some kind of answer on the official Twitter around 20:00”.

And then later writing, “We apologize for the inconvenience this time. We have taken the opinions of many of you very seriously and have discussed them with our board members. As a result, it was decided that “Donpen” would continue as the official character. I look forward to working with you”.
