A research team from Kurashiki University of Science and the Arts investigated the mummified mermaid found in a temple in Asakuchi City in Okayama Prefecture.

It was recorded that the “mermaid” was caught in a fish net in Kochi Prefecture during the Edo period. It is unknown how it got to the temple.

But the results were as follows by the research team: There is no main skeleton, and it is said that it was a modeled one. The upper part of the body was made of paper and puffer fish skin, with cloth, paper, cotton and other stuffing as the base, and the lower part was covered with fish skin.
