Set in a world where Japanese oni demons and humans coexist, “the story of love, friendship, and underpants” follows three oni girls who transfer to a Tokyo middle school. They strive to improve the misconstrued image of oni with the help of a key item with hidden powers — oni underpants, or Onipan.

A Wit Studio anime titled “Onipan!”, which was directed by Ohta Masahiko and written by Aoshima Takashi, is now available on Blu-ray courtesy of Sentai Filmworks.

The series, which aired on TV Tokyo’s childrens variety program “Oha Suta”, is a fun and quirk anime series about three oni: Tsuyukusa, Himawari and Tsutsuji who come to Tokyo in hopes to help the relationship between humans and Oni.

As there is a long history of humans scared of oni, now it’s come to the point where people and oni exist together in society and humans have no fear of oni but oni are also bullied.

So, the three teenage oni attend a Tokyo high school in hopes to fix the oni image in town through school involvement.

For the most part, you are getting 12 fun and lighthearted comedy episodes.

There is no doubt that series does pay homage to other anime series.  In this case, three girls who have special abilities when they were oni underwear.

You can sense the inspiration from series such as “Sailor Moon” and “Urusei Yatsura”, but for the most part, it’s a fun series, but one thing is important for people to know that while there are technically 12 episodes, these episodes feature 5 mini-episodes per full episode (so therefore a total of 60 episodes).  It’s hard to explain but yes, these episodes feel they go quickly.

It’s also important for anime fans to also know that this is aired during a children’s anime block, so don’t expect anything too deep.  If anything, these are quick, fun episodes featuring three oni girls wanting to be taken seriously by humans.

For the most part, “Onipan!” is fun, short and I do recommend it for those who are looking for shorter-duration anime.
