Was Kahala Tomomi hostility towards Marcia on Fuji TV’s “Chidori no Oni Renchan” real or scripted?

Singer Kahala Tomomi appeared on the variety show “Chidori no Oni Renchan” (Fuji TV), which was broadcasted on January 7th. There was a lot of outrage and the internet was abuzz with comments as it appeared as two singers who were partnered with each other, did not work well at all.

The show’s “Chorus Only Karaoke,” in which participants challenge themselves to sing 10 songs in a row without missing a single chorus of famous songs, is extremely popular. Kahala has become a regular member due to her outstanding singing ability and unconventional character, and this time she appeared as a team member with Marcia, who is a singer with rich in emotional expression and with both known for their vocals, it would result in a dangerous tag team that would be hard to beat.

But unfortunately, this tag team seemed to not get along with each other.  Primarily Kahala who aimed her anger towards her partner, singer Marcia.

MC Daigo of Chidori sensed something was wrong when Kahala didn’t say a word, asking, “Are you in a bad mood, Tomo-chan?” “Are you in a bad mood when you entered?”

Amidst the disturbing atmosphere, before the first challenge, Kahala asked Marcia, “How old are you now? Even though she looks like this, she’s 80 years old”. Marcia dismissed Kahala’s comments as if she didn’t care.

During the challenge for the first song, Marcia winced as she moved her left hand up and down beside her face to keep up with the pitch, and this created a tense atmosphere in the studio. Before the second song, Kahala directly complained that Marcia’s left hand was in the way, and even declared that she would prevent her left hand from moving. The relationship between the two of them continues to deteriorate, as Marcia retorts, saying, “I absolutely don’t want you to touch me and I really don’t want to touch you”.

When the challenge for the second song ended in failure due to Kahala’s mistake, she said, “This is because of Marcia-san’s left hand. That’s why I told you, right? I told you to stop”.

Furthermore, when Marcia took an exaggerated deep breath to calm down her anger, she said, “To be clear, this is not boring at all”.

At the studio, where the mood was completely gone downhill, Daigo followed up with a wry smile, saying, “Tomo-chan, in the spirit of service, I thought it would be better to get into a fight with Marcia, but I guess I was gearing up a little too hard”.

This may be one of the reasons why back in November 2023, Kahala declared she quit appearing in the program. Kahala wrote, “I will quit appearing on Oni Renchan as of today. I want to continue to do my best as a singer. Kahala Tomomi, and I have been worrying about this for a long time. I reported this to the producer of Oni Renchan. I’m not a comedian, but I want to do my best as a singer, Kahala Tomomi. I would like all the fans to support Kahala Tomomi. Thank you”.

Some probably didn’t know at the time why Kahala was posting the message on X. But on January 9th, Kahala posted a tweet about her asking her son if he liked her appearance on “Oni Renchan” and her son said yes, “because it’s really interesting”. Kahala ended with “Thank you Oni Renchan. I’m extremely grateful”.

But the vitriol online was heated as people attacked Kahala because of how she behaved on the show.

One person commented, “I couldn’t watch it in real life, so I watched it on TVer, and it was the most unpleasant experience I’ve ever seen. I’ve been a fan for a long time, but I won’t be watching it anymore. She has been blessed with hit songs and is still considered a diva, but I don’t think she would behave that way towards her seniors in the entertainment industry, even if it was to make people laugh. Please don’t appear on TV again!”.

Another commented, “At the very least, I feel that Marcia’s singing ability and pitch are far superior to Kahala”.

Another wrote, “I love Oni Renchan and used to watch it all the time, but it was kind of scary. I don’t want Kahala-san to appear anymore. I think Marcia did a good job of holding back. I thought she was an adult”.

A commenter said, “I’m free to say thank you, but I don’t want you to come on the show anymore lol. Please fix your communication with people. There are too many words and actions. As the comedian Kawashima said, I was convinced that that exchange wasn’t staged, but the real deal”.

Her fans were also torn saying, “I felt like you were a little rude to Marcia, and I was disappointed (this may have been an instruction from the program).
But your singing voice is really nice, so I hope you’ll appear on live shows and singing shows again. I’m rooting for you”.

Marcia on the other hand thanked everyone for their support in a post on Instagram.
