KADOKAWA CORPORATION (Head office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo) announced that several of our group’s websites are currently unavailable.

According to the company, “At this point, we believe that the cause of this is most likely unauthorized external access to the servers used by our group”.

The corporation issued the following statement:

We deeply apologize to our customers, business partners, and other related parties for the great concern and inconvenience caused.

In order to minimize the impact of this incident, we are currently working to protect and restore our systems. We would like to report the details of the issue that we currently know about as follows:

1. Background

Beginning in the early hours of Saturday, June 8th, an issue occurred that prevented access to multiple servers in our group. In response to this incident, we immediately shut down the relevant servers to protect the data. Based on the scope of our internal analysis and investigation that was conducted on the same day, we believe that there is a high possibility that we were the victim of a cyber attack.

2. Current situation

We are currently investigating and responding to the issue, and have confirmed that the impact has been felt on the Niconico Service in general, the KADOKAWA Official Site, and ebten. We are also investigating whether any information was leaked.

3. Future measures

We will continue to investigate the matter with the cooperation of external experts and the police, and will take swift action. We will provide an update once we have identified a more accurate scope of impact and have uncovered any new information that we need to share.
