Japan lost to Poland 0-1 but will advance in the World Cup 2018 Top 16 thanks to the “Fair Play” rule in the tie breaker.  Because Senegal lost to Columbia 0-1, because of the loss of both teams,  Japan was tied with Senegal and both teams had 4 goals, four points and four conceded and so, it came down to the sixth tie-breaker of who had the less yellow and red cards, Japan had 4, Senegal had 6.

Because of this rule, during the Japan vs. Poland match, both teams played conservatively and just passed the ball for the final 15 minutes.  A calculated risk taken by Japan, knowing if Senegal was able to score a point, they would be eliminated.  But because Senegal wasn’t able to score, Japan advances in the tie-breaker due to “Fair Play” rule.
