Baseball manga series “Captain” (Captain 2) to return in Shueisha’s “Grand Jump Mucha” May issue

From 1972-1979, Chiba Aki’s “Captain” entertained baseball fans.

The manga series which ran in “Monthly Shonen Jump”  and his other baseball manga series “Play Ball” (which ran from 1973-1978) won the 22nd Shogakukan Manga Award for shonen in 1977.

The manga series would receive a film adaptation in 1981 and a 26-episode anime series in 1983.

While Chiba died in a tragic suicide at the age of 41, back in 1984 due to issues related to his bipolar disorder, it was announced that “Captain 2” will be returning and it will be written and drawn by popular baseball manga artist Koji Jokura (known for “Ore wa Captain”, “Gurazeni” and “Egawa to Nishimoto”), who also goes by the pseudonym Moritaka Yuji.

The manga will be run in Shueisha’s “Grand Jump Mucha” May issue.

Koji also created the sequel to Chiba’s “Play Ball” in 2017 titled “Play Ball 2” which is still ongoing in Japan.
