Ranked the number one hero anime year after year, My Hero Academia’s first-ever movie took theaters by storm. Witness the excitement that SMASHED the box office!

Deku and his friends take on a daring rescue operation when villains hack into I-Expo—the world’s leading hero item exhibition. All Might is trapped by their sinister plan, and his best hope for saving everyone lies in the new generation of heroes.

The film begins showing us a young All Might in America and his good friend, Professor David Shield in America.

Fastforward to the future, Deku accompanies All Might to attend I-Expo, the hero item exhibition but it gives All Might a chance to see his good friend, David (best known for creating All Might’s costumes throughout the years and now an award winning scientist) once again.

While there, Deku meets David’s intelligent daughter, Melissa, following her father’s footsteps and to Deku’s surprise, Deku finds out that some of his classmates are also at I-Expo.

But things unfortunately go from a cool experience to major trouble when All Might is captured by villains.  Can Deku, Melissa and friends save All Might and what are the villains intentions?

What is “My Hero Academia”?

From Horikoshi Kohei, the creator of “Omagadoki Dobutsuen” and “Barrage”, came his manga series “My Hero Academia” (Boku no Hero Academia).

“My Hero Academia” is a story that revolves around Quirks (people who begin to manifest special abilities) and all of a sudden people in the world began to have many people who became superpowered individuals. Some who use their powers for good, some who use their powers for evil intentions.

Because the government is not equipped to deal with these superpowered thugs, a special group of heroic superpowered individuals came together to protect the people and keep the peace.

The series revolves around a boy named Midoriya Izuku (aka Deku), a boy born Quirkless and looked up to the world’s top hero, All Might. And hoped that one day he could be a hero, despite not having a quirk.

One day, All Might received a near-fatal wound and now, he is losing his powers. When Izuku proves his bravery, All Might decides to transfer some of his power on to Izuku and now, Izuku must train to learn how to use All Might’s quirk and must prove that he has the skills to attend the prestigious U.A. High School.

“My Hero Academia” focuses on the following characters:

  • Midoriya Izuku  – A shy and timid boy who dreamed of becoming a superhero like All Might. Often studying superheroes, when he steps up to save his childhood bully/acquaintance Katsuki from a villain, All Might chooses to transfer some of his quirk to Izuku. And now Izuku has the opportunity to attend the prestigious U.A. High School. He has a crush on Ochako.
  • Bakugo Katsuki  – Izuku’s classmate and bully. He possesses the Quirk Explosion which allows his palm to sweat to become nytrolglycerin and explode. He is egotistical to people he deems are lower than him.
  • Uraraka Ochako  – A girl who has the Quirk Zero Gravity, which makes any object she touches float.
  • Iida Tenya  – The president of class 1-A who has the Quirk Engine, which gives him super-speed via jet engines in his legs. Often seen as serious and scary.
  • Todoroki Shoto  – A student in class 1-A and has the Quirk Fire and ice, which allows his left side to control fire and his right side to control ice. He is the youngest child of Endeavor, the second top hero after All Might.
  • Yagi Toshinori /All Might – The top superhero in the world. But only Izuku knows his secret that five years ago, he was severely injured in battle and because he has transferred some of his power to Midoriya Izuku, now he is losing his power and can use it only for three hours a day. He is a teacher at U.A. High School and his Quirk “One For All” allows him to transfer his power on to another.

VIDEO:

“My Hero Academia – Two Heroes” is presented in 1080p High Definition and the anime series is respectful to the original character designs by Horikoshi Kohei. Animation is vibrant and characters are well-drawn and shaded, art backgrounds are also well-done.  With the benefit of being an animated film, there is an improvement over picture quality and I didn’t notice any banding issues or artifacts during my viewing of the series.

AUDIO & SUBTITLES:

“My Hero Academia – Two Heroes” is presented in Japanese DolbyTrue HD 5.1 and English Dolby TrueHD 5.1. Both soundtracks are fantastic and are well-acted. Dialogue and music are both crystal clear through the center, front and surround channels.

Subtitles are in English.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

“My Hero Academia – Two Heroes” comes with the following special features:

  • Interview with the English Cast – (18:02) Featuring an interview with a few of the English dub voice actors of the film.

EXTRAS:

Both the Blu-ray and DVD versions of the “My Hero Academia – Two Heroes” are included on this Blu-ray release.

With the first-ever animated film of “My Hero Academia”, “Two Heroes” features an exciting storyline that continues to revolve around the student/mentor, Deku and All Might.

The animated film establishes a relationship between All Might and scientist, David Shield, who he had known since studying in the United States and have retained a relationship for decades.

As David has become an award winning professor and All Might, a well-known superhero, we get to see another competition among Deku and his fellow UA classmates.

David learns the truth of All Might and his dwindling power and worries of a world without All Might (who has been able to keep the crime down to 6%).  But All Might dare not tell David the truth of his “One For All” power.

But as trouble arises at a major convention, All Might is captured by villains and Deku and friends must do all they can to save him.  But together, can they defeat these villains?

What I enjoy about this series is the fact that our heroes are not exactly what you expect in terms of heroic characters. Whereas superpowered individuals in American comic books often showcase a character that is ripped, muscular, charismatic or gorgeous, “My Hero Academia” features regular characters and its main protagonist, Izuku Midoriya, is wide-eyed and looks far too innocent and unlikely to be a hero.

As for the Blu-ray release, picture quality is vibrant and BONES did a wonderful job with this animated film and it’s absolutely vibrant and colorful in HD. Because this is an animated film, quality is much better animation-wise, but also both Japanese and English soundtracks are presented in Dolby TrueHD 5.1.  As for special features, you get an 18-minute interview with a few of the English dub cast of the animated film.

Overall, “My Hero Academia – Two Heroes” is an exciting, animated action film.  If you enjoy the anime series, then it’s a no-brainer to check “Two Heroes” out as it’s a fun, action-packed film worth watching!
