Manga Reviews (2010-2019): Yuri Is My Job! Vol. 1 by miman (a Neo-Tokyo 2099 Manga Review)

While this is just the first volume, I do enjoy the series and miman’s artwork.  And while it’s too early to judge, I will say I enjoyed what I read and can’t wait to read more volumes of “Yuri Is My Job!”!

Hime is a picture-perfect high school princess—she’s admired by all and never trips up! So when she accidentally injures a café manager named Mai, she’s willing to cover some shifts to keep her facade intact. To Hime’s surprise, the café is themed after a private school where the all-female staff always puts on their best act for their loyal customers. However, under the guidance of the most graceful girl there, Hime can’t help but blush and blunder! Beneath all the frills and laughter, Hime feels tension brewing as she finds out more about her new job and her budding feelings…

From mangaka miman comes a tale of a girl who wants to be admired at all costs.

Originally titled “Watashi no Yuri wa Oshigotodesu!” (Yuri is My Job!), the first volume is now available courtesy of Kodansha Comics.

The manga revolves around a girl named Shiraki Hime , a girl who has a facade that she’s cute and loveable, when in truth, she is wanting to put up an act, so one day she can marry a rich man.

One day, while walking home, she accidentally trips on the stairs and falls on a young woman who ends up breaking her arm.

Because the young woman, Mai, is unable to work, so because Hime fell on her she would have to work part-time for her at a cafe.

But this is not a regular cafe, it’s a Private School Cafe known as “Liebe Girls Academy” and she would have to use her charm and go by the name Shirasagi Hime .  And the theme is Yuri, close relationship among the females.

And while Hime feels it should be easy, because she could just use her charm and fake it, to her shock, her act doesn’t work with her co-workers.

Despite them also acting and putting a facade in front of patrons, for some reason, when she calls one of her co-workers “Oneesama”, she gets angry!

Can Hime fake her way and win her fellow co-workers into liking her?  Or do they know that she’s a fake and may expose her secret to everyone?

For the most part, the first volume is a character establishing storyline about a popular, cute girl who happens to be fake. She is driven by having people fall in love with her and she needs to have everyone love her, even if they dislike her.

And now that she has to work at a niche cafe in which she has to be super close to other female co-workers, while in front of everyone, they play their parts nicely, behind closed doors, they have problems with Hime.

And with them not liking her, this makes Hime paranoid that they may reveal her true nature.

Overall, “Yuri is My Job!” is a delightful, fun manga series about friendships but also a story of one person who tries to hard to be accepted by everyone and the great lengths she goes to be loved by everyone.

While this is just the first volume, I do enjoy the series and miman’s artwork.  And while it’s too early to judge, I will say I enjoyed what I read and can’t wait to read more volumes of “Yuri Is My Job!”!
