It’s true that early morning breakfast at a restaurant is a concept that has not been fully embraced by Japanese just yet but there are a few restaurants that are popping up or are established in Tokyo in the past few years.

Especially knowing that there are many people traveling to the city looking for an early morning breakfast restaurant, restaurant owners are capitalizing on this.

One restaurant in west Ikebukuro known for serving breakfast is a restaurant known as egg (egg Restaurant Tokyo) which is based off the original egg from Brooklyn, New York which was founded back in 2005.

According to the company:

Egg was founded in 2005 on a set of principles that still animates our work: that it’s not enough for restaurants to serve delicious food in a welcoming environment. We believe that restaurants must also be a force for social good.

  1. We want to be a great place to work. We believe that working with food is some of the most important work in the world, and we want our employees to feel like they’re being treated as people who do important work.

  2. We want to make transformative experiences for customers. At a minimum, we want every person who leaves Egg to feel better than they did when they came in—satisfied, energized, inspired, resilient.

  3. We want to improve the soil we farm in and support other farmers and purveyors who work to improve the soil and the health of the planet we depend on for everything

  4. We want to make good, sustainably-raised and carefully produced food available to more and more people.

We try to live out these principles by serving simple, delicious breakfast and lunch, making food that’s rooted in the culinary traditions of Virginia and the Lowcountry but alive to the influence of the northeast, where we live, and the Hudson Valley, where we farm.

When creating egg in Japan, it was a goal for egg to provide deliciously cooked ingredients with a focus on quality.

Currently there are now three egg restaurants in Tokyo: egg Tokyo in Ikebukuro and also at Tokyo Agricultural University and egg nodai at the Food and Agriculture Museum, both in Setagaya.

The restaurant is open from 8:00 a.m. through 6:00 p.m.

Since, I tend to stay in Ikebukuro, I decided to pay a visit to egg Restaurant Tokyo!

The eggs used at egg comes from farms where chickens are raised at Hayashi Natural Farm in Fukutomi-cho, Hiroshima and chickens are allowed to run around and roam. In fact, they are brought up with love and the farm they source their eggs is committed to the food and environment of chickens.

The eggs are light yellow because the chickens are fed delicious rice made for them. The yolks from chicken from Hayashi Natural Farm eat a feed mixed with rice that are white and bright, light yellow. This leads to an egg high on nutrition and light-taste.

Coffee beans used at egg are organic and they choose coffee beans that are not processed, nor are pesticides, insecticides, chemical fertiilizers used. The choose beans that are have a strict criteria as certified as organic.

I really liked the overall ambiance of Egg, as the interior was clean and customer service was also good. While I wanted to try their original egg rothko, I decided on the White Cheddar Omelet which comes with a salad. I also wanted a drink set and side set, which I chose sausage (you have a choice between sausage, two types of bacon or salad).

For the most part, it’s pretty good for early morning breakfast. While my favorite western breakfast spot is Blu Jam Cafe in Daikanyama (especially for price/portion), for those in Ikebukuro, you really can’t go wrong with egg.

During my time there, I didn’t see many Japanese patrons, mainly travelers looking for an early morning breakfast spot.

The restaurant also serves different types of sandwiches as well, if you want not egg related.

But for the most part, I really do like the ambiance of the restaurant, the breakfast is good and for the most part, convenient if you want a cool restaurant to kick back and eat and talk with your family members or friends, as there is a lot of ample seating.

But most of all, I like the warm message and positive goals, and overall direction of the restaurant.

Good food, good ambiance, if you are staying in the west Ikebukuro section, egg Restaurant Tokyo is worth giving a try!
