The One about Sushi Dokoro Yamazaki at Toyosu Fish Market

The following was originally featured on dennisamith.com:

Sushi Yamazaki was one of the well-known sushi restaurants at the original Tsukiji Fish Market and now with the relocation of the fish market to Toyosu, Sushi Dokoro Yamazaki continues to be one of the top locations for breakfast sushi at Toyosu Fish Market, opening as early as 5:30 a.m. and closes at 2:00 p.m.

While Tsukiji no doubt had its heavily hit places such as Sushi Zanmai (which is everywhere in Tokyo), Sushi Dai (which is the most crowded and has the longest line), Daiwa Sushi following right after, there are those who have always felt Sushi Dokoro Yamazaki as also one of the best and most accessible.

At the new Toyosu Fish Market, with the move, Sushi Dokoro Yamazaki has now become the “goto” sushi spot at the new fish market.

The chef at Sushi Dokoro Yamazaki tends to choose the most flavorful fish of the season.

One of the things I recommend to people if they are going to eat at breakfast sushi is to get the best set. I’ve known people who waited in line to get into a restaurant and they just get something small, because they think it will be enough and I see people regretting it.

In the case of Sushi Dokoro Yamazaki, you have five options:

Kiku(11pcs) ¥4,400
Premium chirashi ¥4,000
Sakura(9pcs) ¥3,700
Fuji(9pcs) ¥3,000
Kid’s meal(5pcs) ¥2,200

And I do recommend for sushi fans, to go for the Kiku set with 11 pieces or the Premium Chirashi (which is random pieces scattered on rice). Sakura and Fuji are nine pieces but those extra two pieces, the omakase is so worth it!

The first thing to do is look on the board of what are the main nine pieces being served for the day and that season. You can order single pieces as well.

And all on the menu does come with miso soup and on the table is matcha green tea to drink.

Of course, I went for the Kiku!

The price is Y4400 and for those on a strict budget, that may be a lot. But if you went to quality sushi restaurants, for breakfast sushi, you would be paying more.

In fact, at Sushi Dai you would be paying over Y5000 and you also would be paying close to Y10000-Y30000 at even more higher quality restaurants, so Y4400 for a full set is actually a great price!

As for what was the special of the day, it was:

  • Rosy Seabass
  • Alfonsino
  • White Shrimp
  • Firefly Squid
  • Sea Robin
  • Cutlass Fish
  • Bonito
  • Live Prawn
  • Seared Fatty Tuna

And of course, you get the tamagoyaki. If you get the Kita set, you get +2 (chef’s omakese and what I ate, I’m not quite sure as I can’t find where in the video I took of what I exactly ate). Nevertheless, all were delicious!

I have to say that Sushi Dokoro Yamazaki was delicious and while many people have felt Sushi Dai is the best (which I did enjoy, not the seven hours it took), I have come to a conclusion that you really can’t go wrong with a sushi restaurant at a fish market.

I will say that at Toyosu, being a new facility, the restaurants now look more cooler, cleaner and more hospitable.

Sushi Dokoro Yamazaki looks like a high class sushi restaurant at the new location and they also serve high quality sushi, thanks to the fish market being at the new location with them.

Granted, I don’t want to take away anything from the outer market of Tsukiji which still exists and people can still get their fresh fish as the drive for workers is not so far at all.

But I will say the breakfast sushi at Sushi Dokoro Yamazaki is one of the best at Toyosu Fish Market.
