When it came to “TERRACE HOUSE: OPENING NEW DOORS” (2018-2019), Tanaka Yui was one of the more controversial characters. With the death of pro wrestler Kimura Hana (also a cast member of “TERRACE HOUSE: TOKYO 2019-2020”), many wondered how others were able to deal with the online harassment.

Tanaka was recently interviewed by Bunshun. Here are key excerpts from the interview:

Tanaka Yui of “TERRACE HOUSE: OPENING NEW DOORS” is the first “Terrace House” cast member to speak to Bunshun since Kimura Hana’s death.

Tanaka said she was called “fat”, “disgusting” and told to die everytime she would update her SNS. Some were scary threatening messages of “Be careful when you take the train back home” or “I’m going to kill you after your part-time job”. She would get around a hundred threatening messages per day.

Yui talked about how her dream was to work in a bridal industry but when she received online harassment, she decided to change her plans. She got messages of “I don’t want to have a wedding where Yui Tanaka is”.

Yui talked about how her relationship with her mother got worse because the online harassment affected her family. Her mother was worried because the online comments were getting worse and worse. People who lived in the neighborhood of her family were watching “Terrace House” and it was becoming difficult for the family.

It’s one of the reasons why she stayed on “TERRACE HOUSE: OPENING NEW DOORS” longer, because it was the safest place to be. She felt that if she left while the online harassment was high, it would have affected her family even more. If she graduated from TH and went home, her family could have been identified and hurt her family. She was also very scared because the university and part-time job were announced on the show.

Yui said that the people who came to the Terrace House were good people. She also said her close friends worried about her and the people around her gave her support. She added, “The friendly comments from the fans were very encouraging. Even if I had a heartwarming comment, I was sometimes saved by that”.
