The legendary sword “Excalibur” weighs and measures all. Anyone it deems worthy of gaining tremendous power does so, and inherits the name “Arthur”. However, Excalibur dubs generously. With an overabundance of “worthy” dignitaries, six Arthurs travel to England to defeat the corrupt leadership that plagues their country and the world.
NOTE: The following being reviewed is the Digital Edition and not the Blu-ray release
In 2012, Square Enix released their online free-to-play card battle game titled “Kaku-San-Sei MillionArthur” for iOS and Android.
Square Enix would then continue with a sequel game “Kai-Ri-Sei Million Arthur” and in 2018, a MMORPG titled “Han-Gaku-Sei Million Arthur”.
An anime adaptation titled “Operation Han-Gyaku-Sei Million Arthur” would premiere in Japan in October 2018 through June 2019 with a total of 23 episodes and 1 OVA released.
And now a full collection of all episodes titled “Million Arthur – The Complete SEries” was released on Blu-ray courtesy of Funimation.
The series revolves around a time when the sacred sword Excalibur was created to judge a person’s ability to be the King of England.
Whoever the sword accepts will be called “Arthur” and will obtain great power. But instead of one Arthur, there are many, which has led to a mass creation of legendary Arthurs and history would become distorted.
Wanting to correct and restore history correctly, a group of six Arthurs have been tasked to go to England and defeat all those who have managed to obtain the power from Excalibur and destroy their swords.
And the group would be sent back in time until they destroy a million Excaliburs.
Selected to lead the team is Dancho Arthur, a cheerful young woman who also happens to be a perverted woman who is attracted to her female Arthurs. She is accompanied by her fairy Nuckelavee.
The other Arthurs include a fighting Arthur named Tekken Arthur who fights with his gauntlets with his fairy Titania; an Arthur named Yamaneko Arthur who wields a rocket launcher and is joined by his fairy Coupy; Renkin Arthur who has a huge mallet and dislikes being called a young girl and is joined with the fairy Bodach; Kakka Arthur, a magician with a spellbook who is joined with his fairy Brigitte; Ruro Arthur, a man with twin firearms joined by his fairy Bethor.
Because of Dancho’s weird and perverted nature, the Arthurs have a hard time believing that Dancho is their leader. But through ongoing missions, they start to realize that while she is weird and perverted, she is also a caring and determined leader worth following.
“Million Arthur” is a fantasy anime series that had the potential to be something more.
Would it be an anime series in which seven Arthurs must challenge their rivals but show that no matter how powerful they are, they can still be beaten?
Or is this an anime series that provides the happy ending and its characters will entice viewers of wanting to play those characters for the video games?
The anime series was no doubt created for the latter. A fantasy, action anime comedy series with perverted humor, if anything, the anime series is fun but a bit over-the-top as its leader, Dancho Arthur, is constantly a pervert. Granted, there are many anime series which focused on a perverted guy, which have done well.
But in terms of context, as this is a series which focuses on multiple characters, not just one, to see Dancho Arthur thinking about being with one of her female Arthurs was a bit too much. Even hearing her fellow Arthurs complain about her, fed my distaste towards Dancho to the point that I no longer cared.
It’s a shame because the first ten episodes of the first season, it would end with a season finale that made me excited, as I thought the anime would become more serious and darker. Instead, it never felt like the characters were in much danger. It was more or less Dancho Arthur being perverted and then back to being a leader and then back to being perverted and then behaving like a leader. Too much back and forth with this and for me, watching each episode, it became too monotonous.
The anime series was created to be released in conjunction with the MMORPG “Han-Gakyu-Sei Million Arthur” (which would eventually be a failure and didn’t even last a year), instead focus shifted to the action RPG “Kou-Kyou-Sei Million Arthur” for the iOS and Android.
Did producers tell the writers to make Dancho be perverted, so they can show as much fan service? Was it to boost otaku’s interest in the video games or perhaps to sell more resin models in Akihabara?
This anime will surely appeal to the anime fans who like action. Especially for those who like easy to follow, non-complex anime series and most of all, an anime series dedicated to those who love perverted anime series. But anyone else wanting more from a story, more complexity and something memorable may want to pass on “Million Arthur”.
