NOTE: The following being reviewed is the Digital Edition and not the Blu-ray release

In 2013, a web novel titled “Arifureta Shokugyo de Sekai Saikyo” written by Shirakome Ryo and illustrated by Takayaki was created and would eventually lead to a print run of 11 light novels.

The light novels would lead to a manga adaptation and then in 2019, an anime adaptation which ran from July 2019-February 2020 with a total of 13 episodes and 2 OVA’s created.

And now the anime adaptation has been released on Blu-ray and DVD courtesy of Funimation.

A high school student named Nagumo Hajme and his classmates are transported to a fantasy world.

While his classmates have powerful magical abilities, Nagumo only has the basic alchemical magic to transmute solid materials.

During a dungeon raid, Nagumo is betrayed by one of his classmates and as everyone is able to escape, Nagumo drops to the bottom of the dungeon, left for dead.

As Nagumo wonders where he is, immediately his left arm is ripped off and as he tries to escape using his transmute magic, he ends up making into a chasm where a very rare mineral with healing properties has saved his life.

Nagumo who needs to eat, manages to kill one of the monsters and after he eats it, he immediately obtains their abilities.  And with each monster he kills, he starts to gain their abilities which he uses to defeat even more powerful monsters, in which he eats them and gains their ability.

For Nagumo, he is driven by revenge by being betrayed by his classmates and wants to get back home but he knows he needs to survive the dungeon which gets tougher each time he progresses.

As he enters an area, he sees a girl who has been imprisoned who asks for his help.  Nagumo isn’t interested but when she tells him that she was betrayed, Nagumo who knows how it feels to be betrayed frees her.  The girl is named Yue and she is a vampire princess and the last of her kind.

Nagumo invites her to join him to escape the dungeon and get home.

Along the way, the two encounter others such as Shea the rabbit-girl, Tio the masochist and from the half-dragon Klarus tribe, Myu the half-mermaid girl and more who would join Hajime in his adventures to find home.

“Arifureta From Commonplace to Worlds Strongest” is an action/adventure harem series which I found entertaining and addictive.

For anyone that has played any dungeon crawling video game series or for those who watched an anime series about a heroic adventurer, “Arifureta From Commonplace to Worlds Strongest” has a main protagonist who is an anti-hero.

Changed by his ordeal of being betrayed and left in a dungeon to die, who would imagine leveling up or in this case, getting stronger is by eating the enemies/monsters you slaughter.

And where most adventurer protagonists fight for the sake of justice, Nagumo is a person who has changed to a man who will kill anyone who becomes his enemy.  Interesting to see the character change from a high schooler with fear, but having been in the brink of death and havnig to survive, has change to a person who fights to survive.

While he could be cold and calculating and could care less, deep inside, he does care but because of his goals of finding home, he’s not going to waver.

And eventually, there are those who want to be with Nagumo and will join him in his adventure.

I absolutely enjoyed “Arifureta From Commonplace to Worlds Strongest” from beginning to end.  Full of action, excitement and the series will also make you laugh.  Five stars!
