State of Emergency is declared in Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto and Hyogo Prefectures

Prime Minister Suga Yoshihide declared a state of emergency for Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto and Hyogo prefectures in an effort to curb the surge of coronavirus infection cases before the Golden Week Holiday.

This latest state of emergency is much stricter banning restaurants and bars from serving alcohol and asking major commercial facilities (department stores, shopping malls, movie theaters and amusement parks) to temporary close from Sunday through May 11th.

Eating establishments will be asked to close at 8:00 p.m.,those serving alcohol or offer karaoke services will be asked to close entirely.  The fine will be up to 300,000 yen ($2,800) for those who do not follow.

Schools will remain open, although universities are encouraged to conduct classes online.

“We will implement short and intensive measures during Golden Week, strengthening steps related to eating establishments and temporarily halting the flow of people,” Suga said.
