Mikoto Urabe might be an anti-social loner who sleeps on her desk, carries scissors in her underwear, and laughs insanely for no apparent reason, but when Akira Tsubaki comes into contact with her saliva, he finds himself inexplicably addicted to her. And if that’s not an unusual enough basis for a relationship, what’s even weirder is that not only does Urabe seem to find this twisted state of affairs to be completely normal, but she already appears to have plans for her new friend! But can a girl having great expectorations for you be a good thing? Find out as Urabe puts a spittle love in Tsubaki’s heart and things get REALLY bizarre as “sharing spit with a girl” takes on an entirely new meaning in the most dysfunctional bodily functional anime ever!

In 2004, Ueshiba Riichi created a one shot story of “Nazo n o Kanojo Ekkusu” (Mysterious Girlfriend X). The story would eventually become serialized in Kodansha’s “Monthly Afternoon” magazine in 2006 and would receive an anime adaptation from April to June 2012 and a one episode OVA as well.

The anime has been released on Blu-ray courtesy of Sentai Filmworks and “Mysterious Girlfriend X – Complete Collection” is receiving a complete collection re-release on Blu-ray in 2021.

The anime series revolves around two individuals. Tsubaki Akira is your normal teenager who lives with his father and sister and goes to school.

One day, a new, yet strange girl named Urabe Mikoto starts sitting next to him.

Urabe is quite strange. All she does is sleep during class and on that first day of going to school, she bursts out in hysterical laughter.

Later that day after school, Tsubaki forgot his book in class and goes to get it. He finds a sleeping Urabe and before he wakes her up, he sees a lot of drool coming out of her mouth onto the desk. He wakes her up and Urabe leaves.

But Tsubaki can’t help but stare at her drool and wonders what it tastes like. So, he puts his finger in Urabe’s drool and sucks on his finger.

But it doesn’t take long for him to get sick and he is out of school for days as his fever won’t go down.

Urabe shows up to his home in the pretense of giving him his homework which he missed at school but in truth, she tells him that she knows he tasted her drool. And explains to him that he is suffering from “love sickness” which he got from her drool. And the only way he can be helped is by giving him her drool each day.

And so, Tsubaki gets closer to the “strange girl” Urabe for his daily dose of drool, and eventually they become boyfriend and girlfriend. But Tsubaki hopes he can get closer to her more than just sharing drool.

“Mysterious Girlfriend X – Complete Collection” is presented in 1080p High Definition. Animation is very good, detailed and vibrant. From many location scenes and varying backgrounds, the background art is well done.

AUDIO & SUBTITLES:

“Mysterious Girlfriend X – Complete Collection” is presented in Japanese DTS-HD 2.0 Master Audio. Dialogue is crystal clear and the overall stereo soundtrack is very good. Granted, it’s not 5.1 but for the most part, I was quite pleased.

Subtitles are in English.

My first impression of “Mysterious Girlfriend X” was that it’s an anime series that could have went the ways of being a perverted hentai anime series, but instead focuses on teenage love, with a perverted, yet sexual way of doing things, without crossing the line.

You have Tsubaki Akira who sees a drool of his classmate all over her desk and once she leaves the room, he tastes her drool. Seriously, who does that?

Well, Tsubaki did it and he gets sick and the weird classmate of his, Urabe Mikoto knows why and it’s because he became love sick. Suffice to say, Urabe is a master of drool. By tasting drool or giving out drool, she has a keen sense of what a person is thinking about and can sense their emotions.

She also has this thing of carrying scissors in her panties, so if anyone does her wrong, she’s gonna cut you up.

Obviously, this is not an anime series for children or teens. It’s more mature. For example Tsubaki wants to farther with Urabe in his relationship.

Granted, she’s not going to have sex with him, but she has him closing his eyes, she strips off her clothes, transfers her drool into his mouth and he gets a nose bleed. He obviously doesn’t know what’s going on because he is blindfolded.

Yes, the two are somewhat innocent as they are young sweethearts that have not had sex. But they have a special bond because of tasting each other’s drool.

Meanwhile, there are moments where their relationship is found out by a classmate, who also is interested in drool. And then there is Tsubaki’s childhood crush coming out of nowhere and wants to challenge Urabe in who’s drool can win over Tsubaki.

Needless to say, for those who like these fan service type of anime series,will like this anime series. It has a lot jokes, it’s quite humorous, yet perverse and because of its storyline, it makes the anime series a bit unique. And even better, it’s only 13 episodes long!

Overall, if you dig humorous and perverse anime, then “Mysterious Girlfriend X” is for you!
