As the last surviving member of her clan, Mirai Kuriyama was born with the ability to control her blood and wield it as a weapon, a power so terrifying she’s been cursed and cast out for the rest of her days. Akihito Kanbara’s blood is only half human, and while the healing abilities of the monstrous half of his lineage let him recover from any wound, it also dooms him to eternal life alone.

Perhaps it’s more than just chance that has brought them together, for there are few bonds in creation as enduring as those written in blood. Now, in a world where the creatures of legend are real and nightmarish monsters tread the earth, they will seek out their destiny together!

From the popular and still ongoing light novel series “Kyokai no Kanata” (Beyond the Boundary) came an anime series from 2013 from Kyoto Animation.

The manga series featured a 13-episode TV series, five ONA episodes and two animated films.

And now, the complete series, the ONA series and the two animated films have been collected in “Beyond the Boundary – Complete Series Collection” courtesy of Sentai Filmworks.

The series begins with a teenager Kanbara Akihito going to save his classmate Kuriyama Mirai from committing suicide.  But then we see Mirai suddenly stabbing Akihito with a sword which she had created by her own blood.  But for Kanbara, he feels the pain but he can’t die because he is immortal as he is half human and half youmu (supernatural creature).  As for Mirai, she’s a Spirit World Warrior (Ikaishi) who protects humans from being affected by Yomu and is the last surviving member of the clan.

Throughout the series, the storyline focuses on these two, Mirai who is supposed to kill Youmu and Youmu who go after humans.

But these two are different.

Because he is half human, Kanbara maintains his humanity, but in the case he loses his will, he wants to be killed.   He also happens to be a guy who loves girls with glasses and thus he is fixated towards Mirai.

And while Mirai knows her duty, the thing is that these two grow close to each other to the point that they know they are falling in love with each other.

The series also features the Nase clan who governs the Spirit World Warriors in their area who try to protect the world from Youmu but also worry of the day that Kanbara may lose his will and becomes full Youmu.

Meanwhile, there is a mysterious person in the Spirit World Warriors Observation department who has his own plans and harbors a youmu within his body.

As much as I would like to get more into the series, saying too much can easily spoil this anime series, so I’m going to keep it short and just say that this is a wonderful anime series that isn’t too long but yet contains so much, to entertain anime fans who want a shorter, action-driven anime series.

The series is very entertaining and full of adventure (and violence, so it’s not for the kids!).  Because there are a few good number of characters, a lot of the storyline helps introduce each character but most of all focusing on the growing relationship between Kanbara and Mirai and suffice to say the last few episodes are quite emotional but is the perfect buildup to the second animated film (the first one is more or less a recapping of the TV series in animated film format).

“Beyond the Boundary” is a series that looks great in HD, plenty of action, emotional drama and for a complete series collection, you get the TV series include episode 0, the ONA plus two animated films for a great price!  Highly recommended!
