Being a murderer isn’t the worst part of Aya’s new situation, however, as it turns out that there have been other Magical Girls before Aya, and someone has been systematically hunting them down, killing them and taking their magical artifacts! Together with her classmate Tsuyuno, Aya must now track down the other magical girls and discover who is murdering them and why… all before an ominous counter finishes a deadly countdown on the MAGICAL GIRL SITE!

Back in 2012, mangaka Sato Kentaro would create the dark animated series titled “Maho Shojo Obu ji Endo” (Magical Girl Apocalypse) about magical girls who come from dark backgrounds who have special abilities that unfortunately lead to deaths in the city.

The manga series would continue from 2012-2017, meanwhile Sato would work on a spin-off series titled “Maho Shojo Saito” which would be serialized from 2013-2019 written at the same time.  But the latter would received an anime adaptation courtesy of production doA.  And now the series is available on Blu-ray courtesy of Sentai Filmworks.

“Majo Shojo Saito” is a series that begins with Asagiri Aya, a middle school girl who is severely bullied and abused by girls at school, while at home, she is severely abused by her brother, Kaname.

One day, she finds a toy-like gun in her locker and when she visits her website, a creepy looking person tells her that she will grant Aya magical powers, she just has to use the gun.

One day her bullies are tired of the same torment, so to have fun, they call in one of their bully guy friend’s to rape her.

Asagiri tries to run and escape but when one of the girls and the guy find her, she takes out the gun and shoots it at them.  The two end up disappearing in front of her and are transported into an oncoming train and are run over.

When Asagiri goes out, everything is all red, blood is coming out of her eyes and a classmate named Yatsumura Tsuyuno, the only person around her that is moving, tells her that she is not alone.

We eventually learn that people who are in the most darkest of moments of their life are approached by this creepy character through the Magical Girls Site, and each person is granted a special gear that has a special ability.  And the more you use it, you will lessen your life.

But Yatsumura needs Asagiri’s help because there are other magical girls who are set on killing other Magical Girls, especially one who tries to steal other girls magical gear.

Can the two find a way to capture the individual responsible for killing the other Magical Girls, can they find out more about the Magical Girls Site?  But can Asagiri prevent the bullying and torment that she endures each day?

When I first saw the cover, I figured oh, a “fighting girls” anime series.  Which the series turned out to be a “fight girls” anime series, but with many magical girl anime, they tend to be bright, cheerful and sugary sweet.

“Magical Girls Site” is not sugary sweet.

The first episode alone is just dark and dismal as we see a normal girl, Asagiri Aya, so kind, getting bullied in the worst fashion from her students.  Tacks on the stools, kicked, punched and just when you think she can find safety at home, her brother who is looked at as the hardworking student, uses his sister as a source of anger release by severely punching and beating her until she is out and he gets off on that.

Immediately, I was getting sick of watching this torment and I was going to give up, until we see Asagiri Aya get this magical gun and when he see her use it for the very first time, her life changes instantly.

But is there light and hope for Asagiri, well, you’ll have to watch and learn of other magical girls and the chaos that ensues.

But I actually did enjoy this anime series.  It’s dark, its twisted and creepy at times, but it’s different.  And when banality becomes a common setting in anime series, you want to see something different once in awhile and “Magical Girl Site” does provide that.

If you don’t mind very dark, twisted and f’d up anime series, then definitely give “Magical Girls Site” a try!
