Why is Kahala Tomomi’s weight loss regiment so fascinating to Japan?

In Japanese media, Kahala Tomomi’s weightloss has become the focus these past few months.

But many may ask “why?”, since entertainers go on diets frequently? What makes Kahala special?

First, many people need to know who Kahala Tomomi is. She’s part of the TK family that rose to the ranks along with Amuro Namie, Uchida Yuki, Shinohara Ryoko, Mizuki Alisa, TRF, globe, hitomi, H-Jungle with T, to name a few, during the ’90s.

There is no doubt that the ’90s was a magical moment for Japanese music. While pop music has always been there for Japan during the ’80s, rock music, adult contemporary or idol music were what was charting.

TRF broke new ground in 1993 with “EZ Do Dance” and introduced the Japanese public to contemporary dance music. But it did not end there, as we saw Amuro Namie, Uchida Yuki and Shinohara Ryoko entering the charts and debuting at #1.

While these three solo singers were established earlier, Amuro as part of the Okinawan explosion with the Super Monkeys, Uchida Yuki as one of Japan’s top young actresses at the time and Shinohara Ryoko as a former member of Tokyo Performance Doll (TPD).

Kahara Tomomi was a model for VanCam and Vivi and did gravure work. But when she teamed up with popular musician and megaproducer Komuro Tetsuya (TK) for “Keep Yourself Alive”, many took notice.

But it was her second single with TK titled “I Believe” that would make her a star. She would debut at #1, have a million seller, she had a bubbly personality and it would be revealed that she and Komuro Tetsuya would be a couple.

But a few years later, because the two were a couple, they would also become tabloid fodder. From rumored drug abuse, to relationship troubles and a declining music career (coinciding with the downward peak of Komuro Tetsuya’s music oversaturation in the market), Kahara Tomomi became the focus of fall from grace. So, much that people read suicide attempts.

And while many artists and groups broke away from Komuro Tetsuya to work with other producers, TK would focus on Suzuki Ami, Kahara Tomomi, now without TK, would be writing her own songs, working w2ith different producers at a new label.

While she would receive good reviews for her music, unfortunately sales dipped below 50,000 and eventually 12,000.

She would have health issues, that would affect her making personal appearances and from there on, she would be focused as a woman fighting her own demons, trying to make it back into the entertainment world.

But for fans and those who support her, Kahala Tomomi is one that people grew up watching on television. Seeing her bubbly, smiling and entertaining people is what she is best remembered. And many people want to see her in that same place. To be happy…

And so, with this new challenge of losing 20 kilos and working hard to get fit, many are seeing a drive from Kahala Tomomi not seen for a long time. A fire that within her that keeps her to keep pushing and many people are inspired by that.

It’s a spirit that many people are pulling for the singer and wanting to see more success and happiness in her life. And that is why many find Kahala Tomomi’s weight loss regiment so fascinating.
