Murakami Munetaka (22) hit his 55th homerun on September 13th, tying the record set by Oh Sadaharu (tying the Nippon Professional Baseball record for a Japanese-born player) which Oh accomplished for the Yomiuri Giants back in 1964.

Now Murakami has his eyes set on breaking the season home-run record of 60 set by former Yakult Swallows player Wladimir Balentien (set in 2013).

The chances of Murakami surpassing Balentien’s record is quite good considering that there is still many baseball games yet to be played for the season.

The Tokyo Yakult Swallows currently have the best record in the Central League with 73 wins and 53 losses, six games ahead of DeNA Yokohama Baystars who are 66-58.

Meanwhile the Softbank Hawks has a short lead with 68 wins and 58 losses in the Pacific League, with the Orix Buffaloes two games behind at 68-62 and the Seibu Lions, three games behind at 67-63.
