While I was going through the channels, I realized there was so much New Year’s Even content, from Johnny’s to Momoiro Clover Z and other stations with content to go up against the NHK 73rd annual NHK Kouhaku Uta Gassen.
NHK did something bold by including K-Pop artists performing Japanese songs or J-Pop groups affiliated with K-Pop companies and unfortunately, this brought out some antis with their hashtag: #紅白見ない [not just for K-Pop groups, but for those who don’t like NHK or had other things to do.]
But one thing is for sure, NHK took a gamble and it may have paid off, the positive hashtags overcame the negative hashtags. But we will have to wait until the viewing statistics come in to see how the broadcast did.
The ratings for “NHK Kouhaku Uta Gassen” have been on a downward trend for several years and they knew they need to get attention and not only did they get a lot of attention, they also posted the highlight videos on YouTube.
