It’s not easy being an orphaned refugee, especially when you’re not on the planet where you were born, but Carole Stanley still has big ambitions. However, while she dreams of forging a career in music, something isn’t quite right yet. There’s a spark that’s missing. Tuesday Simmons has lived a life of comfort, so no one expects it when the shy young woman suddenly runs off to another city, taking little more than her beloved guitar and a need to perform with her. When they meet, Tuesday’s spark ignites Carole’s fire, and their musical ambitions begin burning anew. Achieving their dreams will be hard in a world where music is created by AIs, but if they don’t give up, soon all the worlds will know the names CAROLE AND TUESDAY!

As the animation production studio, BONES was planning to celebrate their 20th anniversary and the 10th anniversary of their record label, FlyingDog, a 24-episode anime TV show titled “Carole & Tuesday” was developed and aired from April to October 2019.

The English dub was streamed worldwide on August 2019 and now, the Blu-ray release featuring both the Japanese and English soundtracks was released in December 2022 courtesy of Sentai Filmworks.

The series is set in the distant future in Mars.  The planet has been partially terraformed and we are introduced to Tuesday Simmons, a girl who grew of wealth and daughter of a significant politician.

Wanting to pursue her dream of becoming a singer/musican, Tuesday runs away from home and travels to Alba City to pursue her dreams.

While her belongings but her guitar was stolen, she ends up seeing another musician performing and trying to make her dreams come true, her name is Carole Stanley.

Carole is an orphaned refugee from Earth who is an aspiring musician and Carole takes Tuesday into her home and together, they aim to make it as music artists together.

Upon performing and a video gone viral, a former rock drummer and music manager Gus Goldman and his acquaintance Roddy discover the talent of Carole & Tuesday and Gus vows to get these girls where they need to go and both Gus and Roddy use their connections to make things happen!

Meanwhile, we are introduced to others who aspire to be music artists such as Angela Carpenter, a famous model who wants to be a singer and works with Tao, a music producer who prefers to use advanced AI to make music.  And trying to please her mother/agent Dahlia Carpenter.

We also meet an egotistcal DJ named Tao and and a few others in the Mars music industry.

I tend to gravitate to a lot of music-inspired anime series especially those with a storyline with a more serious tone.

“NANA” was one that I loved the music, but the storyline was far much darker than I would have imagined.  “Carole & Tuesday” was more enjoyable, uplifting and I absolutely loved the music!

At first, I was wondering how this whole storyline of being in the far future, on the planet Mars would affect the storyline, but in the way it was handled, it was done just well.

You have Tuesday Simmons, a young woman who grew up in a wealthy family, not very social, very shy and naive and perhaps the biggest thing that had come to her life is meeting Carole Stanley.

Carole is a refugee from Earth and has been trying to survive on her own without not knowing who her true parents are.  Taking on survival jobs to keep afloat.

And the two meeting by chance and then just really becoming a perfect duo, needless to say, their paths crossing was no doubt destine and together they make great music.

But how to get from point A to point B, that’s where the supporting characters of Gus Goldman (a once popular rock drummer who has gained a lot of weight and became an alcoholic) to Roddy, a sound technician for popular DJ Ertegun, do what they can to use their connections to help Carole & Tuesday.

You do get this interesting story with snooty singer Angela Carpenter, who was a popular actress turned singer but you get to see this person go through the changes such as Carole and Tuesday, each with their own problems and challenges.

Throw in some political intrigue as Tuesday’s mother is a popular politician running for the presidency of Mars, working with other corrupt politicians who is trying to further problems between Earth and Mars and just wanting to find her daughter, not because she misses her but because she may embarrass her campaign.

The planning of the integration of other characters, including those in the music industry works very well, but what even works even better is the singing and acting.

Both soundtracks are well acted and well sung, the singers behind the songs – Nai Br.XX and Celeina Ann did a magnificent job.  I usually don’t go too crazy for an anime soundtrack (I think the last time I did was “Nana”), but “Carole & Tuesday” has fantastic music!

The anime looks great on Blu-ray and the soundtrack for both Japanese and English soundtracks are provided, although I wish they included a 5.1 soundtrack.

There are several special features including animated shorts, making of, music videos, song lineup, Japanese promos and the usual clean opening and closing animations as well.

Personally, when it comes to music driven anime series, “Carole & Tuesday” may be remembered as being one of the best ever created and the most well-rounded.

“Carole & Tuesday” is highly recommended!
