Humanity was about to make its next great leap in the conquest of space when the attack came. As it quickly became clear that the alien Wulgaru’s technology for warfare far surpassed that of Earth’s, desperation set in. But there was one hope – the genetically modified humans who had been intended for the next wave of exploration. Now, coupled with new and untested advanced weapon systems, the Evolved Children have instead become Mankind’s last line of defense. Their task seems as impossible as it is simple, to follow orders, to kill the enemy, and to fight to their last breath. Izuru, Asagi, Kei, Tamaki, and Suruga of Team Rabbits were meant to be explorers. Instead, they’ve become cannon fodder in the deadliest of battlegrounds, the empty void between the stars in MAJESTIC PRINCE and MAJESTIC PRINCE: GENETIC AWAKENING!

FIELDS, a Japanese company who was working on a multimedia project, created the sci-fi series “Majestic Prince”.

This would lead to a manga series written by Ayamine Rando with illustration by Nijima Hikaru and original work/planning by FIELDS/Sotsu which ended in 2019 and an anime series titled “Gingai Kikotai Majestic Prince” which would air on Tokyo MX from April 2013 to Sept. 2013.

While the series was released with an English dub, it was re-released with a special 25th episode which ties into the 2016 anime feature film and now in 2023, released as a complete collection on Blu-ray courtesy of Sentai Filmworks.

“Majestic Prince” a series which introduces us to genetically engineered teens who are part of a group known as Team Rabbits. A team which has failed at their school, Military Junior Pre-Academy (MJP). They get terrible grades, they often get in arguments with each other and to the students at MJP, they are regarded as “Team Failure”.

But as the galaxy is under attack by an alien race known as Wulgaru, Team Rabbits are ordered to various missions to prove that they are not failures but they can also work as a team and exceed all expectations.

The team includes:

Hitachi Izuru – The main protagonist and the pilot of the mecha “Red 5” and dreams of becoming a hero. While enjoying hobbies such as drawing manga. For some reason, he has memories of a woman. But is not sure what it means.

Asagi Toshikazu – The Vanguard and calm thinker of Team Rabbits. He pilots the mecha “Blue 1” and often gets nervous which leads to him having an upset stomach. While others grow as a pilot, Asagi worries about his self-worth.

Kugimiya Kei – The tactics controller of the team and pilots “Purple 2”. She has highly developed auditory perception and loves food that has an excessive amount of sugar. She is attracted to Izuru.

Irie Tamaki – The gunner of Team Rabbits that pilots the heavilyu armored “Rose 3”. She is well-endowed and absolutely loves squid guts. She is also a person whose hormone is on the rise and loves guys who are very cool.

Suruga Ataru – The gunner of Team Rabbits. Loves weaponryu and sniping as well as providing long/mid-range support fire. He pilots “Gold 4” and often flirts with women which tends to backfire on him.

When watching “Majestic Prince”, I have to admit that the first initial episode didn’t win me over.  But when you give it some time and see how the characters grow from their experience as individuals and also as a team, that is when you start really enjoying it even more and more.

As you start to see two sides of the war, from the human side to the alien Wulgaru side and learning how humans were able to develop their mecha, it is an exciting series that gets better and better.

Mainly because these individuals are living beings, granted they were scientifically engineered and raised for battle, but they still have emotions and seeing these emotions in play and them trying to figure things out on their own and then open up as a team, really makes this series worth watching.  Mecha animation and battles are great! Character development and acting (for both Japanese and English dub) are well-done.  This turned out as a wonderful series.

It’s also important to also remind people that episode 25, featuring another team is included.  But this episode is more or less a bridge for the 2016 animated film which doesn’t take long after where the series ended.

And the cool thing is that this awesome series absolutely has more content, considering that the manga series ended in 2019.  There is still a lot more story to tell.  But whether or not we’ll see another season, we’ll have to wait and see.

If you are a person who loves mecha anime series with wonderful character development and captivating storylines, then “Majestic Prince: The Complete Collection” is highly recommended!
