Nothing lasts forever, so opportunities presented must be taken before they are lost. In Japan, this philosophy is symbolized by the brief bloom of the cherry blossom, and it is under the cherry blossoms that Tada, who dreams of becoming a famous photographer like his late father, meets a girl who has lost her way. As it turns out, Teresa is staying at the hotel next to café owned by Tada’s family and she and her companion Alexandra will be attending Tada’s school, where they even join his photography club. What Tada doesn’t know, however, is that Teresa is secretly a princess who’s come to Japan to experience normal life before returning to her own country and an arranged marriage. And that means that the attraction that they begin to feel for each other may be as ephemeral as the cherry blossom.

Doga Kobo may not be a well-known anime production company outside of Japan but they have been catching attention for their 2019 anime series “Danberu Nan-Kiro Moteru?” a.k.a. “How heavy are the dumbbells can you lift?”.  But in 2018, they released a romantic comedy titled “Tada-kun wa Koi o Shinai” (Tada Never Falls in Love).

The series aired back in April-June 2018 and now the anime series will be released on Blu-ray courtesy of Sentai Filmworks.

“Tada Never Falls in Love” begins with a high school student and photographer named Tada Mitsuyoshi, he observes a blonde girl taking photos of the trees.  With her broken Japanese, the girl named Teresa from Larsenburg asks him to take a picture of her.  But her battery for her camera is dead.

He agrees to take a picture of her by using his DSLR but before he could give it back to her, she leaves.

By another chance encounter, the two meet again and she explains that she learned her Japanese through watching her favorite series “Rainbow Samurai”, thus she has a funny of speaking.

While the two meet again and seeing that Teresa is wet from the rain and seeing that she is hungry, he takes her to his grandfather’s cafe, where she is introduced to Tada’s grandfather, his younger sister Yui, his friend Ijuin Kaoru and the family cat, Nyanko Big.

Meanwhile, they are introduced to Teresa’s caretaker/bodyguard Alexandra Magritte and both find out they are staying next door at the hotel where Tada lives and also will be attending the same highschool.

And as Teresa and Alec become close friends with Tada’s friends and also join their high school’s photography club, Teresa holds a secret that she and Alec have been keeping to themselves.

VIDEO:

“Tada Never Falls in Love” is presented in 1080p High Definition and 16×9 Widescreen. As expected from a TV series, there is slight softness, but the for the most part, but I love the realistic setting that Doga Kobo has done in creating the Tokyo atmosphere and locations (especially the Tokyo Skytree area).

AUDIO & SUBTITLES:

“Tada Never Falls in Love” is presented in Japanese and English DTS-HD MA 2.0.  And for the most part, voice acting is well-done.  For the English dub, it took a while to get used to the Larsenburg accent of Teresa Wagner, but for the most part, Sarah Wiedenheft did a good job with it.  And as always, Josh Grelle did a wonderful job as the voice of Tada Mitsuyoshi.  If anything, both Japanese and English soundtracks were well done.

Subtitles are in English.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

“Tada Never Falls in Love” comes with the clean opening and ending sequences.

I’m always interested in watching anime romantic comedies and it’s always a treat to find a series that doesn’t involve anything magical or supernatural.

“Tada Never Falls in Love” is a series that I don’t want to spoil much but will say it’s about a group of friends who bond really well, and for Tada Mitsuyoshi, he’s been a guy who has not shown much emotion since the death of his parents when he was younger.

Since the death, he has bottled up his emotions and really never spoke much about it.  His good friend Kaoru has always been there to watch over Tada and if anything, many are happy to see Tada being happy since Teresa arrived into his life.

But what happens when Teresa, who is not from Japan, has to leave Japan to Larsenburg immediately?

It’s a very simple, entertaining romantic comedy but there is a lot of heart in its storyline.  In fact, I felt that I was captivated by its story that I couldn’t stop watching episode after episode, so I binged watched this anime series from beginning to end.  It’s that good!

There was one episode that was a bit out of left field, but was quite fun and it involves Tada’s fat cat, Nyanko Big.  It’s a hilarious episode and focuses on the cat perspective and how Nyanko Big also happens to fall in love.

And more as comic relief, you have the appearance of a man who looks exactly like professional assassin, Golgo 13 (one of Japan’s longest running manga series since 1968 by Saito Takao).  The man is a frequent patron to the cafe and plays an important part later in the series.

And as one will no doubt laugh and be entertained by “Tada Never Falls in Love”, I also have to say to get that tissue box out, especially towards the end, as the series becomes much more emotional in the last three to four episodes.

Overall, I was very pleased by “Tada Never Falls in Love”.  It’s a delightful romantic comedy, which I highly recommend.
