Takahashi Rumiko has received the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres from France

Shogakukan announced on the 6th that manga artist Takahashi Rumiko , known for her popular manga “Ranma 1/2”, “Maison Ikkoku”, “Urusei Yatsura” and “Inuyasha”, has received the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres from France.

Today, on April 6th, a ceremony was held at the official residence of the French ambassador to Japan in Minato-ku, Tokyo, where Cultural Counselor Charlinly Brosseau conferred the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres on Takahashi Rumiko.

Japanese manga artists who have received the award in the past include Taniguchi Jiro, Otomo Katsuhiro, Matsumoto Leiji, Toriyama Akira and Nagai Go

Takahashi made her debut in 1978 while studying at Japan Women’s University with “Kate na Yatsura”. Her representative works include “Urusei Yatsura”, “Maison Ikkoku”, “Ranma 1/2”, “Inuyasha”, and “Kyoukai no Rinne”. In 2017, the cumulative number of books published worldwide surpassed 200 million copies. In 2018, she received the Eisner Award “Hall of Fame” in the United States, the Grand Prix of the French Angoulême International Painting Festival in 2019, and the Medal with Purple Ribbon in 2020.

Takahashi commented, “Thank you very much for giving me this honorable medal. I am very happy that people in France are enjoying my work, which is based on everyday life in Japan. Encouraged by this, I will continue to do my best to draw manga. Thank you very much”.
