Ongaku Cafe (The ’90s): Moritaka Chisato – Kaze ni Fukarete (October 1993)

I’m impressed with Chisato Moritaka’s return to music and this new and more mature look. It will be interesting to see what kind of music we will be hearing from her. But as for this single “Kaze ni Fukarete”, it’s absolutely wonderful!

In 1987, musician and singer Moritaka Chisato made her official debut as a music artist. A former Pocari Sweat Image Girl (a contest she won a year before her debut), Moritaka would become Japan’s top female idol performer in the late ’80s leading up to the early ’90s.

But Moritaka took a break and has now reappeared with her 20th single “Kaze ni Fukarete”, a single to showcase the new and mature Moritaka Chisato.

Breaking away from her idol years, what a wonderful way to begin this new chapter in her life with “Kaze ni Fukarete”, a sad breakup song and a song about wanting to get away from everything, go far away to a new place and away from that person you were once with. And also a natural tie-in to ANA’s La Kyushu.

Moritaka has always had a way with writing these songs and her last ballad “Ame” was also heartbreaking. But as that song was part of her idol past, “Kaze ni Fukarete” is a ballad from the new and mature Moritaka and is just a wonderful ballad. It’s also important to note that Chisato also performed the acoustic guitar and drums on this track as well.

The coupling track is “Kyushu Sodachi” and an upbeat rock song that really ties into All Nippon Airways promotional campaign. A pretty cool upbeat song which Moritaka wrote and also performed the guitar and drums for.

The final track is the karaoke for “Kaze ni Fukarete”.

Overall, I’m impressed with Chisato Moritaka’s return to music and this new and more mature look. It will be interesting to see what kind of music we will be hearing from her. But as for this single “Kaze ni Fukarete”, it’s absolutely wonderful!
