MonoMax magazine’s popular long-running series “BEAMS Tokusatsu department”. The BEAMS Tokusatsu Department, which was formed by staff who love tokusatsu at the select shop “BEAMS”, interviews various people and sites involved in tokusatsu every time.

This time, actor Kazuto Mokudai, who is appearing in the role of Azuma Michinaga in “Kamen Rider Geats” was interviewed!

Here is an excerpt from that interview:

Hisayoshi: Michinaga used to be a heel, but lately he’s become a popular character.

Mokudai: I also thought he was a bad guy at first, so I played him in a hateful and offensive manner. However, there is a side of him that cares about others, and a passionate side, such as fighting with the pain of losing friends on his back. That’s why I’m thinking of playing a guy who looks like a heel, but who’s straight up good.

Hisayoshi: The other performers also don’t know the future development.

Mokudai: Yes. I can tell you the outline of the next script, but other than that, I don’t know anything at all. That’s why I’m always nervous when I receive a script, and every time I read the script, I think, “Michinaga is still alive, so let’s do our best in the next filming”, and I think I can go back to the beginning.

Hisayoshi: It’s difficult to act without knowing the ending.

Mokudai: I was confused at first. Up until now, I’ve been acting in such a way that the climax would be the most impressive, thinking, “If I work backwards from there, I’ll suppress my emotions here.” But this time, I don’t know what’s going to happen next, so I’m trying to do my best in everything I do. It’s very difficult, but it’s a worthwhile challenge, and I’m sure that what I’ve gained here will lead me to the next one, so I think it’s been a really good experience.

Hisayoshi: Tokusatsu has other special scenes.

Mokudai: It was refreshing to play with my imagination after receiving the explanation that “there is a huge enemy here.” At first, it was difficult to imagine, but as we went along, the scale of the imagination of the cast came together. I feel that such a sense of unity is unique to special effects.

Kubo: How was the dubbing?

Mokudai: It was a tough fight (laughs). It was difficult to act with only my voice, and at first I was the weakest, but when I imagined the atmosphere of the scene and was conscious of my breathing and how to speak, I was able to gradually get the OK, so now. I’m looking forward to the dubbing as well.

Kubo: What do you want to do in this year?

Mokudai: I want to do more action scenes. Currently, I don’t have many action scenes myself, but I feel a sense of accomplishment, so I’d like to do a long take.

Kubo: What kind of action?

Mokudai: Parkour. I want to take on the challenge of spectacular action.

Kubo: Are you okay with high places?

Mokudai: It’s okay.

Kubo: What about skydiving?

Mokudai: That’s a bit… (laughs). But I’ll try my best!

Kubo:I think you like clothes, what is your source of fashion information?

Mokudai:  I often go to select shops and roadside shops. Talk to the store clerk there and get some information. Originally, I liked looking at the clothes used in my work outfits and researching the brands. I found out about MASU about two years ago, and I thought it was great, but now they’re really popular, aren’t they? From now on, I wonder if domestic brands will become as popular as imports.

Kubo: Your commitment to clothes is wonderful. Are you interested in anything other than fashion?

Mokudai: I want to drive a car. If you can drive a car, the range of activities will expand. I’m the type of person who likes to go outdoors with my friends when the time is right, so if I had a car I could go to various places and I think it would be fun. I have Kamen Rider filming right now, so I don’t have much time, but when the filming is over, I’ll be the first to get my license.

Kubo: Is there a car you want to drive now?

Mokudai: I admire Lamborghini Urus and Benz G class. It would be nice if I could get into a manly car.
