AKB48 to abolish the team system

Since 2006, AKB48 has had a team system: Team A, Team K, Team B, Team 4 and Team 8.  Each team having their own distinct style and their own songs.

AKB48 announced that it will hold a spring concert at Pia Arena MM in Kanagawa, and will abolish the team system in the fall.

A goodbye concert will be held for each team from August 4th to 6th.

General director Mukaiji Mion said, “I can only say that I’m lonely,” but looked forward, saying, “I think it’s time to get together and make AKB as a whole lively.”

AKB has teams A, K, B, 4, and 8. Team 8 will hold their last concert on the 30th, but the remaining four teams will also cease activities. Due to the abolishment of the team system, the captain system will also end.
